Kenshin Himura Preview (No Spoilers)

Rurouni Kenshin follows the adventures and relationships of Himura Kenshin during the Meiji Era in Japan. Despite having played a major role in the revolution, he was quick to disappear into obscurity the moment things had ended. Now, we meet him as a wanderer carrying a reverse blade in order to help maintain the peace of the new era without spilling blood. Though he believes the new government still needs to go through some reforms, he strongly believes that it has the potential to truly protect the weak. Thus, his willingness to protect it from those who wish to disrupt its course. One important question, as his enemies continuously grow stronger, is whether or not he’ll be able to hold onto his new ideals while needing to protect the future peace of Japan.

Kenshin Himura Bio

Seiyuu Name: Himura Kenshin Himura Kenshin is a rather frail-looking and small samurai with long red hair tied into a ponytail, purple eyes, and a cross-shaped scar on his left cheek. Though drawn in an effeminate manner by Nobuhiro Watsuki, Kenshin’s eyes still follow the sharper design more associated with male figures in the anime world, especially when he’s serious. This is done to great effect as his eyes, outside of his cross-shaped scar and long red hair, are one of his most defining qualities. He dresses in rather plain clothes: a burgundy men’s kimono, a white umanori hakama zori, and a white tabi. His weapon of choice during the new Meiji era, even though swords are not allowed, is a reverse blade (sakabato). He uses this weapon specifically so that he may never take another life. Despite his rather youthful appearance, he is 28 years old, which also means that he was only 18 when fighting in the war. He was known as Hitokiri Battosai during the revolution. He fought for the Imperialist side, hoping to bring in an era that protected the weak, while using the famed Hiten Mitsurugi style. One of his most noticeable catchphrases is his surprised/confused reaction of “Oro!?”

Kenshin Himura Highlights

1. The Past of a Hitokiri

Rurouni Kenshin Captcha Picture1
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Capture Image" url="" ]

Just look at those eyes. Kenshin Himura was one of the most feared samurai during the Meiji Revolution. He had earned the monikers of battosai and hitokiri (manslayer) for his unmatchable speed once settled into his battojutsu stance and the amount of lives he stole during the revolution. Granting him such prestige was his lightning speed (a trademark of the Hiten Mitsurugi style that he practiced), incredible acrobatics and a coldness that detached him from working with anyone else and sent chills down the spine of any opponent. His skill was a leading force for the side of the Imperialists as he was one of the few able to hold his ground against the force of the Shinsengumi. However, he did not come unscathed from his work as an assassin. His main reason for joining the revolution in the first place was to create an idealistic world where the weak wouldn’t have to live under the strong-arming nature of the Shogunate. In fact, he initially did not finish his Hiten Mitsurugi training under Seijuro Hiko, thinking that it was a waste to learn if he could not use it to enact change. Nonetheless, the countless people he had to slaughter shattered his ideals and numbed his senses. It went so far that sake began to taste like blood. His disdain for killing reached its peak after falling in love with Tomoe, and he hoped to escape from the hellish war that he had molded. Once more his hopes were dashed and he received the second line of his telltale scar when he accidentally killed Tomoe. It’s for this reason that he left the assassination work, which sadly led to the rise of his ultimate rival, Shishio. By all means, the man is a legend, and he is one whose name alone can strike fear in weak opponents and heightened anticipation for the strong.

2. Reverse Blade

Rurouni Kenshin Captcha Picture2
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official website" url="http://www.kenshin-tv.com/kamiya/odai/no04_result.html" ]

Kenshin Himura’s reverse blade is the symbol of his sorrow and his wish to repent. His unwillingness to kill and simply protect has led him down a path of humility. It’s this personality that defines Kenshin in the series as well as gives way to several of his more characteristic reactions and saying. For example, his lovable use of the word “Oro” whenever he’s confused or caught off guard. Then there’s his constant use of honorifics like “dono“, and the way he tends to end sentences with a kind-hearted “that it is.” These personality traits along with the sight of a reverse blade is enough to make others question if he could even be the famed battosai. Considering his wish to remain in obscurity, such as the time he lies to Kaoru about who he is, the reverse blade is and allows him to remain in relative obscurity. This desire of his to remain hidden is only furthered by the fact that Kenshin always refers to himself as a simple wanderer. Though in real life, the way he smacks people around with his reverse blade is questionably fatal, it simply acts as a means to incapacitate enemies rather than kill in the show. He continues to use the reverse blade despite its relative difficulty in handling when compared to a regular blade. Most powerful opponents criticize his use of the reverse as it’s a sign of a weak mental state, and Jine even mentions how the reverse blade slows down his battojutsu.

3. Call to Duty

Rurouni Kenshin Captcha Picture3
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 3" url="" ]

Though he resigned from his position as an assassin, he still acted as a vanguard for the Imperial troops, protecting them from such combatants as the Shinsengumi. In this role, he was able to shed as little blood as possible while continuing the progression of the Imperial forces. Considering how disillusioned he became with the war, the fact that he still maintained some role demonstrates just how firmly he believed in finishing what he started. Then when it comes down to the Kyoto arc, he willingly abandons those closest to him in order to properly take on Shishio and his subordinates. Kenshin intimately understands that it was his own personal choice that allowed Shishio to rise to such power, and that many of the negative consequences of the war are on his shoulders. Thus, he understands that it is his responsibility to make reparations and allow the current government to continue its democratic reforms. It is an extremely hard choice for him to make as his friends have offered him a chance of happiness that he never thought possible, and he has personal fears that might have to resort to killing when fighting against this new threat. However, he’s not about to allow more chaos to enter into the world.

4. Willing to Forgive

Rurouni Kenshin Captcha Picture4
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 10" url="" ]

As a man who has taken countless lives, Kenshin knows well the depths of guilt, and he also knows the path to redemption. He understands that there is always beauty, possibility, and sanctity in life. It is through this thought process that he believes that even when you have done something wrong, you can only true make up for it through the actions you perform while alive. Thus, he’s always able to forgive others and generally will aid those who are willing to reform. Throughout the entire series, we watch as Kenshin consistently advises others to turn their backs on their current actions and pursue a different lifestyle. He truly hopes for others to take a path of redemption and is constantly willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt if they say they’ll reform. Not only this but he acts as a major catalyst in several characters’ reformations, including Sanosuke (thug to respectable ally), Megumi (opium maker to doctor), Aoshi (mercenary to proper ninja leader), and Soujiro (mentally unstable subordinate to a free spirit).

5. An Innocent Romantic

Rurouni Kenshin Captcha Picture5
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Kyoto Episode 31" url="" ]

Kenshin is about as innocent as they come in anime. With his dark past always haunting him, it’s not hard to understand why he never pursued another romantic relationship and why he believed that he didn’t have the right to have such a relationship. Quite frequently he states that he doesn’t feel as if he deserves to share in the happiness of others. Plus, considering how dingy and shabby he appears as a wanderer, Misao even mentions at one point how scrappy he looks, it’s not too hard to assume that he didn’t receive many offers in the first place. Nonetheless, when feelings between him and Kaoru begin to grow, his advances are very traditional and slow. Upon leaving her in order to fight Shishio, he merely embraces her. The moment is surprisingly impactful and emotional, even though many might have felt their relationship had warranted a more intimate moment. Well, what can you expect when it takes until about the last few episodes of a 94-episode series to confirm that their relationship has indeed moved to the next level. Nonetheless, it is clear from his slow progress that he has an idealistic view of love and how it must be handled.

Final Thoughts

Kenshin is simply one of those characters who you can’t help but root for. He’s a man constantly doing everything he can to make up for his past and is always willing to help others. His range of emotions is impressive as well, and each expression never fails to hit the mark. Whether his eyes are swirling/popping out with his catchphrase “Oro” or triangular with a gold tint when he enters into his manslayer phase, Kenshin’s emotions are imparted powerfully onto the viewer. This is simply the way it should be for a warrior-saint.

Based on the hit manga by Watsuki Nobuhiro, Rurouni Kenshin is a historical fiction Shounen series that takes place in the year 1878. During this time period, Japan has been quickly adapting to the advancements of other first world nations. Swords are now banned and the samurai class (or the caste system as a whole) is officially done away with. However, there are some that disagree with the current direction of the nation and still carry arms in attempts to protest the government, but at the expense of the innocent. Protecting the innocent is Himura Kenshin, a former assassin for the government who has renounced his old ways, and has reversed his blade in order to uphold his vows to never kill. Kenshin meets various friends and foes that have their own unique and understandable goals in regards to the future of Japan, or their own personal futures. For today’s list, we will explore the Top 10 Rurouni Kenshin Characters. For some of you hardcore fans of the original manga, we want to disclaim to you due to Honey being an anime-centric website, this list is going to exclusively cover those who have been featured in the anime.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Kamiya Kaoru

rurouni kenshin kaoru

Kaoru is the present master of a kendo dojo whose goal is to instill principles and morals (such as fair play and sportsmanship) as opposed killing. As swords are now officially outlawed in Meiji Japan, Kaoru manages to teach Japanese fencing through bamboo swords called Shinai. In order to maintain her principles, Kaoru and her official disciple, Yahiko, will always use a Shinai in battle. Despite a good portion of her role is being the typical damsel-in-distress, Kaoru has shown great aptitude in combat. Though her skills are not up to par with the likes of Kenshin and Saito, she manages to defeat Honjo Katamari of the Juppongatana, and she has a keen sense of how other opponent’s techniques work and exploiting their weaknesses.

9. Makimachi Misao

Misao Makimachi Rurouni Kenshin

If Okina is the head of the Oniwabanshu with Aoshi as its muscle, Misao has to be the heart. Though the Oniwabanshu are initially introduced as antagonists working for a dishonorable drug lord, through Misao, the audience learns that the group isn't evil. Through her open feelings for Aoshi, fans get opportunities to see that there is hope for someone as cold as Aoshi. Despite being a teenager and still in training, Misao has considerable ninja skills that help Kaoru and Yahiko in their battle against the Juppongatana. During the Kyoto arc, she always takes the initiative and it assists her in assuming a role of leadership of the Oniwabanshu. Unlike other characters who were based on real life historical figures and American comic characters, Misao is based on Nakoruru from the Samurai Spirits and Shiranui Mai from King of Fighters/Fatal Fury by SNK.

8. Myojin Yahiko

Yahiko Myoujin Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Kenkaku Romantan

Yahiko is the orphaned son of a samurai who is initially introduced as a mere pickpocket due to his family’s remaining debts to local gangs. Thanks to the intervention of Kenshin, he is free from his debts and continues his training to be a swordsman as a student of Kaoru whom he develops a genuine brother-sister like relationship with (they were actually brother and sister in the pilot). Yahiko is always motivated to prove to himself that he is a man. When he wanted to protect a girl from some gangsters, Kenshin taught him some basics in fighting multiple opponents by making them chase him and taking them down one-by-one. Thankfully, he manages to use the basics of this. Even though Yahiko never formally learns Kenshin’s fighting style, he has mimicked his moves in his fight against Henya. leading him to his most significant victory.

7. Shinomori Aoshi

Aoshi Shinomori Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Kenkaku Romantan

As the leader of the Oniwabanshu (based on a real-life ninja clan with the same name), Aoshi wishes to make a name for him and his clan. Due to being a ninja, a majority of his techniques requires stealth and speed, and his opponents will fall in the most grotesque of methods. However, due to the cowardice and dishonorable tactics of Takeda, his former employer, costing him the lives of his comrades, Aoshi shows that he is not a villain when he shows that he is emotionally affected by his losses. He feels the best way to regain his honor is to defeat Kenshin. He is obsessed with beating Kenshin to the point that he temporarily allies with Shishio despite his twisted methods. In addition, he almost kills his own master just to find Kenshin. Thankfully, another loss to Kenshin convinces Aoshi that his obsession will destroy him and that his comrades would not want this for him. Coming to terms with his sins, he eventually finds peace in his life with the remaining members of his clan. For some that don't know, Aoshi’s withdrawn personality is influenced by Hijitaka Tokizo, the deputy leader of the Shinsengumi who was known to have rid himself of his own emotions.

6. Seta Sojiro

Soujirou Seta Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Kenkaku Romantan

Sojiro (loosely based on Okita Soji, a captain of the Shinsengumi) is Shishio’s number one man and is also one of Kenshin’s toughest opponents in the animated series. In the anime, he is responsible for the assassination of Okubo Toshimichi, a real life Meiji official who requested Kenshin and Saito to take out Shishio. Though real life history has him killed by bandits, Sojiro made it look like bandits killed him. Not only did he beat Kenshin in their first fight, he destroyed his sword. As a child, he met Shishio after being burned alive and nursed him back to health. Shishio encouraged Sojiro to get back at his family who abused him. When he did, Shishio was impressed by his potential and made him his disciple. In addition to his nimble foot speed, what makes Sojiro a unique opponent for Kenshin is that he always smiles when he fights (due to his childhood trauma). Since Kenshin’s needs to read an opponent’s expressions to get an idea of how they will act, Sojiro is a very difficult opponent to predict. Kenshin eventually breaks Sojiro’s will and defeats him. Thanks to Kenshin’s guidance that he needs to redeem his soul, Sojiro decides to go on his own journey of self-discovery.

[ad_middle]

5. Sagara Sanosuke

rurouni kenshin sagarasanosuke

Despite coming across as a knucklehead, the great thing about Sano is that he has his own unique principles due to his upbringing. As a child, he was adopted by Sagara Sozo and the Sekihoutai (both real life entities), a militia consisting of peasants and farmers working for the Ishin Shishi. Due to a real-life incident in which the government said they would cut taxes in half but couldn't due to the costs of the war, Sozo was blamed for spreading lies and was executed despite following orders by the Ishin Shishi to spread the news about the tax cuts. Due to these incidents, Sano is understandably distrusting of the administration. Knowing that he can't change the past and that he can still be of service to his fellow man, he fights with Kenshin because he respects him for both his amazing strength and for his willingness to atone for his own sins. The best thing about Sano is that though he is not 100% all brains, he is certainly 100% all heart. He wants people to get to the point and aims for the finish when he fights. Despite losing his Zanbato, or horse cutter in his fight against Kenshin, he knows his fists are enough to get the job done and this later expands his skill set when he learns the Futae no Kiwami, the ultimate punch. Despite his background with the Sekihoutai, Sano was based on Harada Sanosuke, a Shinsengumi captain, even though this real life figure did make appearances in some parts of the series.

4. Saito Hajime

rurouni kenshin hajime saito

Saito Hajime is the most notable real-life figure in the series. Like the real life Saito Hajime, he was the captain of the third unit of the Shinsengumi and would later operate as a police officer under the alias, Fujita Goro. In the anime, Saito has a deep history with Kenshin dating back to being on the opposite sides of the Boshin war nearly 15 years prior to the series. However, their rivalry is more motivated by who is the better swordsman as opposed to whose allegiance is just. Due to circumstances bigger than them, Saito joins forces with Kenshin to save their country. Like his real life counterpart, Saito’s signature move is a left-handed thrust, but keeping in tone with the Shounen gimmick, it is given the name Gatotsu. He is equal to Kenshin as a swordsman and is also very formidable without the use of weapons since he made easy work of Sano. Though he may not have the same absolute principles of Kenshin, Saito is a man of honor and knows when to put his duties for his country before his samurai pride. Thanks to the introduction of Saito in the series, many people have become interested in the group he was part of, the Shinsengumi, a military unit that supported the original Shogun regime. Despite the character’s inclusion bringing popularity to the group and as anime as a whole, it has caused controversy amongst historians who dispute whether or not pop culture should portray them as heroes.

3. Shishio Makoto

Makoto Shishio

Shishio is the main villain of the Kyoto-arc. Like Kenshin, he was also an assassin or a hitokiri for the Ishin Shishi during the Boshin War. Due to Shishio’s more sadistic and violent tendencies, the Ishin Shishi feared that he would be a liability after his use ran out. When that time came, he was ambushed and the Ishin Shishi tried to burn him. Despite the attempt, Shishio survived and uses the next ten years to plot his revenge. Beyond his skills with the sword, he is also formidable without any weapons taking out Sano with ease. When he touches someone, he can burn him or her. When grinding with the ground, his sword allows him to create sparks creating flames. Though the man is a maniac, fans can see his point of view for why he is motivated to take out his revenge. In some ways, he is a sympathetic villain. In his final moments, he also shows that he is also capable of true love with his companion, Yumi. Then after his death ending up in Hell, he decides if he couldn't take over Japan, he might as well conquer Hell showing that his ambitions just do not end with his death.

2. Hiko Seijuro XIII

Seijuurou Hiko Rurouni Kenshin Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen

Hiko is Kenshin’s master and the present (and 13th master) master of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu. As the present master of the Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryu, he wears a 200-pound cape to denote his position and to keep him conditioned for the fighting style (Watsuki-sensei said the cape was influenced by Spawn, the face of Image Comics). After Kenshin loses to Seta Sojiro, he seeks his master’s guidance in order to learn the Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki, the ultimate technique of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu. Hiko shows the true significance of his greatness in his fight against Fuji. He appeals to Fuji’s humanity and his respect as a fellow warrior. Despite how hideous Fuji is, Hiko just gave him the respect he was seeking his whole life as a human being and that he only wants to fight him as a fellow combatant for the sake of glory and honor. Though Fuji is verbally limited, he was able to show his comprehension and respect. In this Japanese version of David vs Goliath, Hiko makes easy work of the towering Fuji with his ultimate attack. Last, Hiko is a descendant of the previous Hiko Seijuro in Watsuki-sensei’s one-shot debut manga, Crescent Moon in the Warring States.

1. Himura Kenshin

rurouni kenshin himura kenshin

The main character himself, Kenshin is a former assassin turned vagabond. Upon his arrival in Tokyo, he finds himself in a situation in which both him (by using his former alias, Battousai) and a girl named Kaoru are being framed for a string of crimes. He gets down to the bottom of the situation and reveals to Kaoru that he is the real Battousai but has long reformed in his ways. Despite his kind nature and being small framed, Kenshin feels he has a lot to atone for and feels protecting the innocent while choosing not to kill is the best way to do it. So how does he achieve victory without resorting to killing? He uses a blade called the Sakabato in which the blade is reversed with the dull side facing outwards. When some of his battles push him to his limits, there are instances where the killer in him may resurface and is willing to fight without mercy. But with Kaoru’s presence, he doesn’t have to resort to being a killer to achieve victory. Despite his adolescent appearance, he happens to be 28 years old and there are some theories that suggest that practitioners of the Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryu tend to age slower than average. He is never afraid to run from a fight that in defeat, he does tend to take it with great shock. But with the right push, he can regain his edge and make a triumphant comeback. What is also interesting about his character that is is his unique speech patterns in which he ends everything in (de)gozaru (a very outdated way of saying desu), he says it so much to the point that even many non-Japanese speaking fans can recognize it. Even by the standards of the Meiji era, it was considered outdated! On one last note, Kenshin was influenced by a real life hitokiri named Kawakami Gensai. Like Kenshin, he was small framed but made it up with his technique and speed.

Final Thoughts

Some quick honorable mentions are Jin, Anji, Honjo, Fuji and Cho. So here is our list of top 10 characters from Rurouni Kenshin based on the animated series. Hopefully, one day if or when the Jinchu arc of the manga gets an animated adaptation, this list can be appropriately updated. Granted the characters and the fights from that series would look awesome in animation, we can only dream. So who are your top 10 favorites from this hit Shounen classic?

In this undying classic by Watsuki Nobuhiro, Rurouni Kenshin is packed with some of the most spectacular fights in all anime! A majority of its appeal is in the intricacies of its strategy and reliance on technique as opposed to brute force. The fights may seem stylish, but strongly substance defined. Due to the emotion and sense of danger, the fights immerses the audience in, they are always going to be on the edge of their seats. So grab your swords and assume a battoujutsu stance for Honey’s Top 10 Rurouni Kenshin Fights. But for some of you hardcore fans that have read the manga, we would like to disclaim that being an anime-centric site, this list will be limited to what has been portrayed in the anime series.

10. Hiko Seijuro vs. Fuji

10. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 53
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 53" url="" ]

Starting off this list is Hiko, Kenshin’s master, going up against Fuji, one of the enforcers of the Juppongatana. Fuji is literally as tall as a skyscraper and naturally, people fear him (and his design was inspired from the mechs in Evangelion). Thankfully, in one of the very few instances he disregards his playful and provoking nature, Hiko manages to appeal to Fuji’s humanity and embraces him as a fellow warrior. Though Fuji is nonverbal, he can physically return Hiko’s respect and accepts his duel of honor. In this David vs. Goliath inspired battle, calling it a fight is just not enough. In the end, it was just a simple one-sided ass beating just to show how awesome Hiko is because he is Kenshin’s master. Fuji tries to take a swing with his giant sword, but Hiko just manages to hang onto his blade and returns the strike with his trademark move, Kuzuryusen, easily gaining the victory like it was child’s play.

9. Himura Kenshin vs. Sagara Sanosuke 2

9. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep 24
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 24" url="" ]

This is one scene in the anime that probably does a much superior job than the original manga. In this part, Sano reunites with his old friend from the Sekihoutai, Katsu. Katsu still harbors feelings of revenge towards the Meiji administration for what they did to their former organization and their founder and surrogate father, Sagara Sozo. As an explosives expert, Katsu manages to make a warehouse full of them and convinces Sano to bomb a government building. But for the ever so sharp ears of Kenshin, he’s there before anything can happen. In the manga, Sano knows he can’t beat Kenshin and lets go of his revenge and ends it there. But in the anime, Sano, still consumed by his rage, decides to fight Kenshin. This fight is an excellent representation on how Kenshin relies on reading his opponent’s emotions to anticipate how they will attack. Even though Kenshin humiliated Sano in their first encounter, Sano is driven by his vendetta and gives it all he’s got but is no match for our main hero. Kenshin even holds back for most of the fight and still once again embarrasses Sano, but doesn't report him or Katsu to the authorities out of their friendship, and his need to give people a second chance at life. Thankfully, Sano stays on as a valuable ally.

8. Mayojin Yahiko vs. Kariwa Henya

8. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 52
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 52" url="" ]

In Yahiko’s biggest test in the series, he faces off against one of the trickiest members of the Juppongatana, Henya. Though Yahiko is just a child and his skill set is not as gimmicky as his adult peers, this fight shows you don’t need any extreme tricks to win a fight, but a clever mind and big balls! Yahiko knew what his limits were but still found a way to win. Though he is not to the level of Kenshin, after observing him in action, he decides to do a "What Would Kenshin Do" moment by using his opponent’s attacks to his advantage. When Henya dropped a bomb, he would jump on flying debris to get above Henya and finish him with his own version of the Ryu Tsui Sen gaining one of the coolest victories of the series. From this fight, we can learn that if there’s a will, there is always a way.

7. Himura Kenshin vs. Sawagejo Cho

7. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 40
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 40" url="" ]

In Kenshin’s first major test since his loss to Sojiro, Kenshin faces Sawagejo Cho, one of Shishio’s henchmen. However, Kenshin (under the initial assumption) does not have his new sakabato ready yet so he has to fight more conservatively which puts him at an initial disadvantage. Seeking the same sword as Kenshin, both men duel for the right to use it. But due to Cho’s dirty tactics by using a baby as a hostage, Kenshin is nearly pushed to his Battousai and he draws a new sword given to him only to discover it was a Sakabato thus gaining the victory and saving the baby. This fight demonstrates that a devastating loss is not enough to put Kenshin down and he still has what it takes to not only fight but to protect the innocent. This should teach fans that when you get knocked down, you get back up and fight again!

6. Himura Kenshin vs. Shinomori Aoshi 1

6. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 11
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 11" url="" ]

In Kenshin’s second test in the series as a swordsman, he squares off against Shinomori Aoshi, the leader of the Oniwabanshu, who are being used as hired guns for Takeda, a drug smuggler. However, they are not motivated by his goals, but simply fighting for the sake of fighting. Aoshi wants to defeat Kenshin to be recognized as the best warrior ever. Initially, Aoshi gives Kenshin a good number of problems. Despite his superior size, he likes to use the smaller kodachi, which is more appropriate for him as a ninja. Its size and lightness also allow him to use punches and kicks allowing him full use of his skills. Thanks to the size of his sword, he also has the advantage in reaction times for both offense and defense. Kenshin instantly recognizes this and grips his Sakabato above this scabbard for quicker defense and countering. Aoshi then resorts to his final technique temporarily knocking out Kenshin (with the expectation that Kenshin was killed). Thankfully, Kenshin’s sheath acted as a shield diminishing its deadly effects. Aoshi attempts the same move again but Kenshin manages to find a way to counter it by watching the blade barehanded, and pushing the grip of the sword to Aoshi’s throat by gaining a clever and clean victory.

[ad_middle class="mb40"]

5. Himura Kenshin vs. Saito Hajime

5. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 30
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 30" url="" ]

At number 5, we probably have a fight between the most intense rivalries from this series. The thing about this rivalry is is that it is not motivated by someone with the need to take revenge against the Meiji Government or rule Japan, but it is a personal feud. Not a feud of hate, but a feud fuel by who is the better warrior. The rivalry between Saito and Kenshin goes back to the Boshin War, more than 10 years before the series starts. With the war over, their feud is not about who was right, but unfinished business between two men. In their fight in the Kamiya Dojo, they fight to their limits and in some instances, if Kenshin used a regular sword, he could have beheaded Saito and come out the winner. But Saito with his monstrous stamina and instant recovery, he manages to fight Kenshin to a stand still. The fight is pushed to the point that Kenshin has to go hitokiri on Saito in order to keep up with him. When Okubo Toshimichi, another real-life figure in this series, steps into to stop the fight and begs for both of their help to save the nation and their relationship throughout the series continues as reluctant allies out of necessity. Thankfully, their honor as warriors allows them to see the bigger picture and that the fate of the nation comes before their rivalry

4. Sagara Sanosuke vs. Yukyuzan Anji

4. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 48
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 48" url="" ]

Prior to this fight, Sano and Anji were briefly acquainted while on their ways to Kyoto (without any awareness that they would fight each other). While spending time with together, Sano learns Anji’s trademark technique, the Futae-no-Kimwami (which he learns in a week!). However, upon their reunion, Sano learns that Anji is associated with Shishio and feels it is an obligation to fight him. So this leads to one of the very few fights in Kenshin that does not use weapons. This is a great fight that battles skill vs. will. Though Sano has no formal training besides Futae-no-Kiwami, his will to go on and his natural abilities are the foundation of what keeps him to together. But in addition to their previous relationship, Sano is fighting to save Anji from his own darkness, who wants to fight the Meiji Government for killing orphans he was caring for. Sano convinces Anji that living for revenge is wrong and barely pulls out the victory. Anji comes to terms with his sins and accepts a simple prison sentence to repent.

3. Himura Kenshin vs. Udo Jin-e

3. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 7
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 7" url="" ]

At number 3, we have one of the first “boss” battles from the series, Kenshin’s fight against Udo Jin-e, a fellow hitokiri (and his design is obviously inspired by Gambit from the X-Men). The reason why this fight is considered a “boss” battle because Jin-e is one of the first opponents to give Kenshin a run for this money, and almost making him revert to his inner killer. What also raises the stakes of this fight is that Jin-e has Kaoru hostage and she is paralyzed with poison. If Kenshin doesn't stop him in time, Kaoru may die! Thanks to Kaoru’s presence and support, Kenshin does not succumb to his former hitokiri persona and defeats Jin-e with his batto-jutsu technique. Not wanting to live with the shame of losing, Jin-e decides to end his own life by seppuku.

2. Himura Kenshin vs. Seta Sojiro 2

2. Rurouni Kenshin capture Ep. 56
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 56" url="" ]

In this epic rematch, Kenshin makes his comeback with his new sakabato to defeat Sojiro, his much younger opponent, and Shishio’s strongest henchman. In addition to his nimble footwork and frightening use of angles, what makes Sojiro a unique opponent is that he constantly smiles which makes him difficult to predict how he is going to attack. Kenshin decides to use a little bit of reverse psychology to get Sojiro to crack. They argue about killing vs. protecting, and in the midst of the argument, Sojiro’s abused childhood where he had no protector like Kenshin makes him give into his rage and gives Kenshin the opportunity he needs. With one last attempt with the Shukichi, Kenshin manages to win with his newest counter taught to him by his master. Thankfully, this defeat humbles Sojiro to find a new path in life and redeem himself just like Kenshin.

1. Himura Kenshin (with Saito Hajime, Shinomori Aoshi and Sagara Sanosuke) vs. Shishio Makoto

rurouni kenshin DVD
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00K2DF9EM" text="" url="" ]

After numerous episodes and many battles, our main hero and villain finally trade blades. Since Kenshin had to face Aoshi and Sojiro before fighting Shishio, it is only fair that Shishio has to be worn down by fighting multiple opponents himself. Thankfully, Saito, Aoshi and Sano come in and help out, but Shishio at 100% makes easy work of Kenshin’s most valuable allies. This fight shows that Shishio is a well-rounded fighter and is always prepared. Shishio demonstrates that he can fight without his sword against Sano, who he makes quick work of, and he also shows his readiness (and how he learns from previous experiences) by having a steel protector in his bandana while Saito strikes him in the head. Due to Shishio’s condition where he must need to cool down (due to not having any sweat glands), the fight has to be a battle of attrition and stamina. This fight demonstrates Shishio’s knowledge of fighting and physics by having his blade chipped in a certain way where if he collides it with the ground, he can make flames. But Kenshin’s determination and his developed skills allow him to emerge as the final victor with superior technique. Shishio accepts his defeat like a man and due to the time limit his body can go without cooling down, he allows himself to be consumed by flames as he dies with both his lover and his business associate as they plan to take over Hell.

Final Thoughts

As highlighted, the attraction of Kenshin’s action is the psychology behind it. Yes, the fights are very exciting but the series provides the audience how the action works and why it works. Based on this criterion, we put together the best fights that best reflect those qualities. So how do you feel about this list? What are your top 10 fights from this awesome series? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Along with Naruto and One Piece, Bleach was considered a member of the "Big 3," the 3 best and most popular shounen anime and manga of the early 2000s. And with the anime well behind us, the manga having recently finished and the recent announcement of a live-action film, what a better time to revisit what made earned Bleach its spot amongst the greats. Throughout the series' eight-year run, Bleach has managed to pit its characters against one another in some of the most exciting fights to come out of a shounen. Here are Bleach's 10 best fight scenes:

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Ichigo Kurosaki vs Hiyori Sarugaki

image-10-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 122" url="" ]

Coming in at the number 10 is one of shortest and most one-sided fights in all of Bleach. This fight is exciting because of what know and see is at stake. After coming to the terms with the fact that he needs to learn how to control his inner hollow, Ichigo seeks out the Vizard hoping that they will teach him how to do so. Because Shinji has no plans of teaching Ichigo unless he joins the Vizard, Ichigo decides to fight him hoping to beat it out of him. Hiyori notices that Ichigo, afraid that he will lose control to his hollow, is holding back and decides to join take Shinji's place in the fight. After calling forth her mask, she is able to control the battle (if we can even call it that). It takes one hit to decide a battle, and that’s exactly what happens here: Hiyori lands a devastating blow on Ichigo, cracking Zangetsu in the process. Because of this blow, Ichigo is no longer able to control his hollow, which takes over and slams Hiyori into a wall by the throat. It takes the collective effort from the other Vizard to stepping in and pinning down Ichigo to stop him from choking Hiyori to death. It's this one moment of pure uncontrollable power that earns this fight a spot on this list.

9. Mayuri Kurotsuchi vs Szayelaporro Granz

image-9-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 198" url="" ]

Not your conventional fight, but a battle of the wits is still a battle, is it not? As a battle determined by intelligence as opposed to pure strength, one would think this to be a boring fight, but Mayuri and Szayelaporro make this a fight interesting enough for and worthy of the number 9 spot. In a fight between the strong and smart it's always very one-sided: either the muscle easily beats up on the brains or is completely outsmarted. The latter is exactly what happened when Szayelaporro fought against Uryuu, Renji, Pesche, and Dondochakka. When the last ditch attack failed, it seemed as if all was lost. It's at this time that Mayuri enters the fight! Not only are the two very intelligent, they are also very confident in themselves, and that's what truly makes this an exciting fight. In the end, it's Mayuri whose confidence is well-deserved. After toying with Szayelaporro, Mayuri shows that he is the smartest by constantly being one step ahead of his opponent and always prepared for the unknown. Even when Szayelaporro reveals that he's virtually immortal, Mayuri remains unphased, as ends the fight in perhaps one of the most brutal ways in all of Bleach.

8. Toshiro Hitsugaya vs Tier Harribel

image-8-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 221" url="" ]

This fight makes the list because of how often it ebbs and flows (pun intended) in the favor of Hitsugaya and Harribel. The mantra repeated throughout this fight is "if your enemy's weapon turns to your weapon, then the opposite is true." Hitsugaya's ice-type zanpakutou paired up against Harribel's water based zanpakutou creates a truly exciting back and forth fight. Having zanpakutou with similar elemental powers they fought seeking out the same suitable conditions, but in the end, the conditions were more in Hitsugaya's favor.

7. Kenpachi Zaraki vs Nnoitra Gilga

image-7-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 200" url="" ]

Perhaps the best thing of the Arrancar Arc is that just about everyone meets their match. Having broken into Hueco Mundo to save Orihime, almost all of the captains of the Gotei 13 meet an Espada that pushes them to their limits. Yes, this includes Kenpachi Zaraki, the battle-hungry Captain of the 11th Division, who meets his match in Nnoitra Gilga, the blood hungry Quinta Espada. This brutal fight starts with Kenpachi surprisingly unable to cut Nnoitra, putting him at an obvious disadvantage. At every moment of this clash between brutes, Nnoitra seems to have the upper hand over Kenpachi. Even though Kenpachi appears to be the one with more strength, the battle always seems to be Nnoitra's to lose. After realizing that if he were to continue the fight as it was going he would die, Kenpachi decides to bring out the most secret of techniques: Kendo. Following the way of the sword, and gripping the sword with both hands, Kenpachi is able to fall his formidable foe in one swing of his sword.

6. Shunsui Kyouraku (& Jushiro Ukitake) vs Coyote Starrk (& Lilynette Gingerbuck)

image-6-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 282" url="" ]

Two nonchalant fighters should lead to an entirely unfulfilling fight, shouldn’t it? Much of the fight features the two fiercely going at it, all the while admiring their opponent's ability and commenting on their preference to not be fighting. In awe of the other captains' Bankai, Starrk is determined to get Shunsui to use his Bankai and joins forces with Lilynette to release his Resurrección. Declaring it fair, Ukitake joins the fray. In an exciting two-on-one battle, Starrk shows great respect and appreciation for the two shinigami's strengths. The battle is interrupted, resulting in Ukitake's removal from the fight. The fight later continues and shows exactly why Starrk is the Primera Espada, as he is able to quickly understand the rules of Shunsui's zanpakutou and provide a great fight, even though his opponent has the upper-hand. Shunsui eventually leaves the fight as the victor, but not after a grueling battle.

[ad_middle class="mb40"]

5. Ichigo Kurosaki vs Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez

image-5-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text=" Episode 116" url="" ]

The Invasion of Hueco Mundo Arc should really be renamed to the Grudge Match Arc. Ichigo meets some of his most formidable foes for a second and even third time. Each time they push each other to their limits. Starting in Karakura Town, Ichigo, and Grimmjow, the 6th ranked Espada, engaged in a series of battles that fostered a sense of respect among opponents and culminating in this final bout in Hueco Mundo. The extent of the respect is shown and paired with Ichigo's brazen cockiness when he has Orihime restore the wounds on both him and Grimmjow so that they are able to fight on even footing. During the fight, Ichigo and Grimmjow destroy several buildings as they display their power. Although they it was a close fought battle, Ichigo is who sustained the majority of the injuries. When he realizes that his injuries are causing Orihime and Nel to worry, he manages to end the battle despite Grimmjow unleashing his ultimate technique. Even after his loss, Grimmjow attempts to continue fighting Ichigo, not wanting to lose to someone such as Ichigo. It is here that Ichigo shows his profound respect for Grimmjow stating there is no enjoyment in fighting him to the death when he's already lost and extends an offer to fight him as much as he wants when the time is right. A true sign of respect if there ever was one.

4. Sosuke Aizen vs The Gotei 13 & Vizard

image-4-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 292" url="" ]

In one of the final fights in the Fake Karakura Town, Aizen goes up against all of those that he has betrayed. Despite the fight being seven versus one, Aizen is able to handily dispose of his adversaries. In many ways, this fight showcases exactly how powerful Aizen is: as everyone attacks Aizen he's able to deflect everyone's attack easily. In the end, Aizen shows everyone exactly what "power" is, when reveals exactly how strong he really is. As the two groups seem to take the upper hand and to even defeat Aizen, he reveals that they were under the effects of his Bankai, and their victory was nothing but an illusion. Aizen ends the battle, providing what is perhaps the most demoralizing defeat in all the of the series

3. Ichigo Kurosaki vs Ulquiorra Cifer

image-3-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 271" url="" ]

Another rematch that will go down in memoriam. In this second fight between these two, Ulquiorra once again gets the best of Ichigo. Even though Ulquiorra is in control for nearly the entirety of the fight, that doesn't mean Ichigo isn't able to push him to his limit, forcing him to release his second Resurrección, an ability that he hasn't even shown to Aizen. This fight features what is perhaps Ichigo's most terrifying transformation. In reality, this is one a few key moments that the series has been leading up to Ichigo's hollow finally taking full control. Actually, "Ichigo becomes a hollow" is a better way to put it. This new hollowfied Ichigo easily turns the tide of the battle and shows us the true extent of Ichigo's latent power. In combination with the revelation of new abilities, and forms this fight features some interesting character developments as well. All in all, it does more than enough to make itself one Bleach's memorable, and worthy of a place in the Top 3

2. Ichigo Kurosaki vs Kenpachi Zaraki

image-2-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 39" url="" ]

For a fight with nothing on the line, there was so much on the line. Wait... what? This fight takes place towards the end of the Rukia Invasion arc. Ichigo's opponent, however, is not fighting to stop Ichigo's advancement; Kenpachi is only here for the thrill of the fight. In Ichigo's first fight against a captain-level shinigami, he draws the short stick by coming up against the most sadistic of them all. Much of the start of the fight is Ichigo running, and being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of Kenpachi's reiatsu and killing intent. When Ichigo is able to fight alongside his zanpakutou, Zangetsu, he is able to go toe-to-toe with Kenpachi, forcing him to remove his eyepatch, which served as a limited of his reiatsu. Throughout the entire fight, we get a taste of what it means to truly have a fearful amount of reiatsu. The two come at each other at full power, in one of Bleach's most epic final clashes.

1. Ichigo Kurosaki vs Byakuya Kuchiki

image-1-bleach-capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Episode 58" url="" ]

Another classic fight. What makes this fight truly exhilarating is that this is the first time we see Ichigo's Bankai in this highly anticipated rematch between the substitute shinigami and the head of a noble shinigami clan. In this rematch, we see Ichigo return from his Bankai training to stop the execution of Rukia Kuchiki. After doing just that, Byakuya confronts Ichigo, and the fight begins. Initially, Ichigo and Byakuya appear to be on even grounds in a truly magnificent battle. Ichigo taunts Byakuya to release his Bankai. At first, Byakuya feels his that his Shika is enough, but after Ichigo reveals that he, a mere human has achieved Bankai, Byakuya releases his own leading to Bleach's most fun and exciting fight. This fight has it all: Bankai (two to be exact), Hollow Ichigo, a great sword fight, and a fight where the victor never seems to be decided. What more could you ask for? After seeing fights in Bleach become a battle of special abilities that directly counter one another, it's always nice to remember the days the combatants truly duked it out on the battlefield, and this is the pinnacle of that era.

Final Thoughts

There were easily another ten fights that could have made it onto this list. Like any good battle, however, there can only be one victor... or in this case ten. Some of these fights made the list because of the swordplay displayed between fighters, some because of the special abilities displayed. Whatever the reason, they are definitely ten fights that showcase the best of Bleach. Any qualms with the list? Let us know in the comments below. You'd better come prepared to fight, though. BANKAI!!!

This story of three strangers on a journey across Japan blends with many modern day themes such as hip-hop culture. Unconventional fighting techniques and exoticism produce a vibrancy that is different from the jidaigeki (historical dramatization) shows that still remain popular in Japan.

Here is a list of a few animes that we recommend, some of which notably infuse fantasy and futuristic themes alongside that cool, samurai spirit!

10. Afro from Afro Samurai

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Afro Afro Samurai' anime='dvd Afro Samurai']
[Information episodes=" 5 " aired=" January 4, 2007 – February 1, 2007 "]

Slicing its way into the number ten spot of the list is Afro Samurai. Known for its mixture of hip hop and Japanese historical reference, this anime really made learning about samurai really cool and fun. Afro decides to devote his life to the sword after his father was killed in a duel by cruel villain “justice”. We see Afro embarking on a journey to seek revenge for his fathers death, encountering numerous bloody battles with various other strong samurai. The reason Afro was chosen on our list was because he embodies the awesome persona of a man out to kill, with an urban attitude to back his claim. His words are as powerful as the sword he wields, as he is out to rid of anyone in his way. He just oozes confidence and embodies the true samurai spirit: standing by your morals.

9. Musashi Miyamoto (The gun samurai) from Gun-Dou Musashi

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Musashi Miyamoto Gun-Dou Musashi' anime='Gun-Dou Musashi dvd']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 9, 2006 – October 8, 2006 "]

The name Musashi Miyamoto should ring a bell in your mind if you're very familiar with Japanese history, as he was one of Japan's most revered samurai during the very feudal time in Japan. Throughout his life he had suffered numerous struggles, even at a very young age. While he became known for his exceptionally skilled blade work, most people know Musashi by his famous book called, “The Book of 5 Rings”. This philosophical book became an extremely successful piece of work that would ultimately change the mentality of many Japanese even in modern Japan. Gun-Dou Musashi is the more light hearted but still adventure filled anime, that uses the famous samurais name to give us somewhat of a taste of perhaps what things were like during that period. The main character wields both a sword with electricity, and demon sealing revolvers to put a stop the enemies at hand. Musashi's colorful personality shines as he is a calm, cool, and collected young man with aspirations of becoming stronger in each battle. His quirky behavior at times make the anime a lot more colorful, and add more interesting scenarios among the allies he encounters throughout the show. A wonderful character with whom we all can relate to.

8. Naoe Kanetsugu from Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Naoe Kanetsugu Gifuu Doudou!' anime='dvd Naoe Kanetsugu Gifuu Doudou!']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 3, 2013 – December 18, 2013 "]

Coming in at number eight on our top ten is Gifuu Doudou!!: Naoe Kanetsugu was a very well known military general of the infamous Uesugi family. Taking place in the very famous Sengoku era, Naoe is on a quest to attain the throne with the help of his fellow ally, Maeda Keiji, who also during the Sengoku era was a legendary warrior on the battlefield. They both come together to overcome to the extreme oppressive powers that were in control during arguably one of Japan's most dangerous and volatile moments in history. Despite Naoe playing the role of the aggressive general, you can see a lot of harmony within him as he is playful in nature with characters in the cast. His strong analytical skills paired with his calm demeanor make him such a powerful individual to learn from. It's this well formed balance that gives Naoe a well deserved spot on our list of samurai in anime.

7. Hajime from Hakuouki Reimeiroku

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Hajime Hakuouki Reimeiroku' anime='hakuouki-DVD']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 9, 2012 – September 24, 2012 "]

Hakuoki Reimeiroku takes our seventh spot in the top ten samurai anime because of its great visuals, and real attention to detail pertaining to the events taking place during the ruling of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Japan's long battles with political strife and corruption have erupted into the streets, leading to numerous deaths among the public. The shogunate recognizes this ongoing problem and ships a new force of master-less samurai called Roshigumi, to aid the Aizu forces in Kyoto. Hajime, much like the rest of samurai on our list has a purpose to serve, to protect those in danger while maintaining peace within. Hajime has an extremely strong heart as you can clearly see in the first episode where he is mistreated by his superior. His sheer passion to fight for justice can be seen all throughout the series, but despite his will to fight, you can see the more childish side of him when he's with his friends. His willingness to see all sides of the story make him an interesting character to watch and learn from.

6. Gennosuke from Shigurui

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Gennosuke Shigurui' anime='Shigurui dvd']
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 19, 2007 – October 11, 2007 "]

If it hasn't already occurred to you by now, there definitely is an ongoing trend with regards to a strong tie to the now infamous Sengoku era. This is one era that is often used as a base to express the hardships Japan had gone through during the very tumultuous times during the rule of Tokugawa Shogunate. Shigurui is no exception to this trend as it slices its way into the number six spot on the list. Before all of the onslaught began, the Edo era was one of Japan's most peaceful and economically rewarding times, as society had become more established and businesses flourished. In Shigurui, Tokugawa decides to hold a traditional tournament by which one must use a wooden sword to battle their opponent. However, things change as the rule now states that you must use a real sword and so competition is now more intimidating. Gennosuke is a one armed blade master, which already speaks volumes considering that he wipes out his opponents with despite a handicap. It displays an enormous amount of confidence to be able to pull off such skillful attacks, while at an insane disadvantage. His clever tactics never fail him as he uses trickery to gain insight on his rivals, while maintaining the most mysterious demeanor. That characteristic is what gives Gennosuke the sixth spot, simply because his such an intelligent fighter and demonstrates to all of us that, despite our misfortunes we can all manage to do something amazing.

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Mugen Samurai Champloo' anime='dvd Samurai Champloo']
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" May 20, 2004- March 19, 2005 "]

Coming in at the top five spot in the samurai anime list is none other than Samurai Champloo. Many fans of the show fell in love not with only the characters throughout the duration of the series, but more notably the musical score. Late musical pioneer Nujabes had created some of the best music that anime had ever heard in a very long time, and his spirit still resonates all throughout this anime. From great songs such as “Mystline” to the very powerful opening track “Battlecry” Samurai Champloo never disappoints in any way, shape or form. Mugen is your typical vagabond, a wandering samurai with no purpose. However, when paired up with Jin and his new fond friend Fuu, his true character is revealed. He is an extremely hard working individual who truly has a big heart even though at times his foolish ways get him into trouble. His sweet and charming demeanor catch the eyes of Fuu which help to develop a nice character relationship in the story, and more so the brotherly love between Jin is also a pleasure to watch. It demonstrates the true value of friendship, and Mugen is a great example of a man of many traits but will always lend a hand to those he admires most.

4. Gintoki from Gintama

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Gintoki Gintama' anime='gintama 2015']
[Information episodes=" 200 + " aired=" April 4, 2006 – Ongoing "]

We are now getting one step closer to that number one spot on the top ten list of anime that focus on the samurai lifestyle. Gintama is one of Japan's longest running anime, along with other popular jump franchises such as Dragonball, Bleach and One Piece. Spanning for almost ten years, Gintama is an anime that once seen cannot be unseen. Japan ranks it highly on their own top list of hot anime series, as its extremely popular with every age group all across the country. This journey takes us back to feudal Japan yet again, but this time with main character Gintoki. This isn't your ordinary feudal Japan however, as every encounter Gintoki meets is unusally odd and quirky, which is what adds the spice and flavoring to this tasty treat of a series. Gintoki isn't very keen on finding a job like most other citizens and so we see Gintoki on an endless adventure seeking whatever job comes his way, while battling strange looking monsters, a weird Yakuza clan and much more. Gintoki is an extremely random character who at times makes you question whether he's even a samurai to begin with. But its that spontaneity and jubilant that makes Gintoki so fun to tune into. He is a great people person, as he is able to chat it up with almost anybody in the most innate way.

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Gennosuke Basilisk Koga Ninpo Chou' anime='dvd Basilisk']
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 13, 2005 – September 21, 2005 "]

Choosing a top three of any top ten is never an easy task, as there are a wide variety of popular anime that truly stand the test of time as being great. However, this number three spot could not avoid this list as Basilisk hops in to take the cake. This is one of the more darker and truly fascinating takes on samurai culture in Japan. Taking place in 1614 AD, Basilisk is all about Ninjas, swords, kunais, and more. It is nothing short of awesome, as it takes you in various different directions visually but also emotionally. Two warring ninja clans which are directly associated with the son of Tokugawa, send out ten representatives to fight each other to the death to obtain the ultimate prize: Absolute support from the Tokugawa government and completely eliminating each other in the process. Gennosuke has the ability to look into his opponents eyes and completely take control of his enemies body, forcing themselves to commit deadly acts without thought. He maintains his calm most of the time, because he is madly in love with a woman who sees him as a loving and nurturing man. He tends to avoid eye contact in fear that his eyes may put her in danger, but their love is so strong that it has no effect on her. Gennosuke shows extreme loyalty with his allies, all the while having the insane power to dismember his opponents by just staring at them. It's this mixture of love and justice that gives Gennosuke the number three spot.

Ga-Rei-Zero Spotlight : Yomi Isayama & Kagura Tsuchimiya's Drama

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]

Intro

garei zero DVD2
The Anime Spotlight series continues with another great anime that is worth your precious time. The first episode was action packed and fast-paced. The series never let up, either. This is the first anime that I have binge watched from beginning to end. Nothing has quite caught my attention like that since. I hope it didn't ruin my expectations for future anime. You can be sure that I'll write up an article for the next series that can engage me from the first minute and never let go until it's over. But, for now, let me tell you about this exciting, emotionally driven anime that is Ga-Rei-Zero. [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

What is Ga-Rei-Zero

5.GareiZero
This 12 episode series is a prequel to the Ga-Rei manga. It was developed by AIC Spirits. Some of their other well-known works include: Tenchi Universe, Saint Seiya (2004), Date A Live, and Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (another favorite anime that I recommend). I would categorize Ga-Rei-Zero under drama, horror, supernatural, and action. The series centers around the relationship of two female Vanquishers, people with the ability to see and destroy supernatural threats to Japan. They are both young, especially early on in the show, but as the show progresses they mature and change due to their exposure to horrible circumstances and events caused by the evil spirits.
yomi and kaguya
Yomi is an orphan who is taken in by the Isayama family after her own had been killed by phantoms. She is raised by Naraku Isayama to become a Vanquisher and the eventual heir of the Isayama clan. She is given a sword that has the ability to release a Spirit Beast. As years go by, she becomes recognized as one of the government's best Vanquishers and a child prodigy. She meets a younger girl, Kagura Tsuchimiya, after she suffers a similar fate to Yomi. Her mother was killed by an evil spirit. Her father (a very prominent and powerful Vanquisher himself) then set out to destroy the creature. She was left alone, so the Isayama family decided to take her in. The two girls develop a strong bond as they grow up and train together. Their relationship is key to the entire story. They are constantly protecting each other from treacherous relationships from within the clan and from supernatural threats. I don't want to give too much away. But, at a certain point in the series things fall apart for the two of them and the relationship is forced to its limit and then some. Then an evil being, that has been masterminding most of the attacks seen throughout the series, steps in at this junction and creates chaos for everyone! [ad_middle]

Why You Should Watch

Byakuei

Byakuei

The very first episode starts out like a typical supernatural anime. Some elite teams are tasked with taking out ghosts, zombie-like creatures, and flaming monsters. Exciting, but pretty typical, right? Then, out of nowhere, a sword wielding girl in a school uniform completely turns the show on its head. You have no idea what happened and as you are left staring at corpses covering the floor and you hear the crackling of flames from a nearby explosion. As if that wasn't enough, the catch phrase of this show is: Will you kill someone you love, because of love? That should give you some indication of the type of choices characters will have to make. The question itself is pretty grim and it isn't exactly clear what its relevance is to the show. But, it eventually becomes very clear and heart-breaking. This emotional rollercoaster of a show takes you for an incredible journey in just a short amount of time.

Related Media

Unfortunately, the series was concluded in 12 short episodes. But, the story does continue in manga form. As I mentioned earlier, this story is a prequel to Ga-Rei. The original manga had a run of five years, from 2005 to 2010. So, I would encourage you to pick it up and start reading (just like I will) if you want to follow the characters as they continue their battle against the supernatural.

Tokyo ESP

Also, the creator of the series, Hajime Segawa, has another anime titled Tokyo ESP. It has a similar setting with supernatural enemies and people who have abilities to fight and destroy them. Also, it features some weird creatures like flying glowing fish. I have not seen this one yet, but I plan on checking it out once I get a bit of free time.
As always, I hope to hear your thoughts on the series. Have you seen this anime before? If not, do you plan on giving it a try? Ninja Slayer is a web-series produced by TRIGGER (Studio Trigger). Fujikido Kenji is the show’s protagonist, and resident bad-ass. After his wife and child were killed, he narrowly escaped death himself. In the process, he was possessed by the soul of an extremely powerful ninja. Now, with nearly unparalleled abilities he searches for the ninjas who killed is family. His quest for vengeance earns him the title of Ninja Slayer. It’s a shame that there are currently only three episodes available. So, I’ve done some digging and surfaced some anime that are similar to this fantastic show. Take a look at some options that can hold you over for the duration in between episode releases of Ninja Slayer.

Kill la Kill is a revenge story that was also produced by TRIGGER. Ryuuko Matoi is on the search for the person who murdered her father. The trail of clues leads her to a prestigious academy that is governed by a special student council. They possess “goku uniforms”, a type of uniform that gives its wearer superpowers. Similar to Ninja Slayer, Ryuuko receives supernatural abilities to aid her on her quest for justice. That assistance takes the form of Senketsu, a blue sailor uniform with sentience. Using Senketsu and her unique scissor blade, she has to take down the head members of the council. All the while she tries to discover who is really behind her father’s death.

[Information episodes="13" aired="Aired: December 25, 2012 – March 19, 2013"]

Another anime from TRIGGER, Inferno Cop, has a very similar premise to Ninja Slayer. The main character’s family was killed by an organization known as the Southern-Cross. This man, claiming to have risen from hell, seeks to punish the evil group and anyone else who has the audacity to bring the law in Jack Knife Edge Town. It seems as if Ninja Slayer carried on the spirit of the Inferno Cop series. But, where Inferno Cop was minimalistic in its animation, Ninja Slayer is a bit more fluid and has more special effects. The action is over the top. The tone of the humor is extremely comparable to Ninja Slayer. I love that the humor is present in almost every single frame. If the characters aren’t doing something outrageous then their dialogue or timing is securing a laugh out of the audience.

3. Gankutsuou (Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo)

gankutsuou dvd
[Information episodes="24" aired="Aired: October 4, 2004 – March 30, 2005"]

This retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo is another tale of a man seeking revenge (seeing a pattern here?) for his false imprisonment. In this version, he receives powers from a demon that allow him to strike down the ones who exiled him to Cheateau d’If. This series has a very unique art style. It is nothing like Ninja Slayer, and yet it still stands apart from most contemporary anime. Interestingly enough, the plot is not told through The Count’s point of view. Check this out if you’re looking for an interesting story with an art style that pops and is just as important as any of the main characters.

4. Mononoke

Mononoke
[Information episodes="12" aired="Aired: July 13, 2007 – September 28, 2007"]

Mononoke is an interesting piece set in feudal Japan. Kusuriuri is a “medicine seller” who wanders around the country encountering “mononoke” or lingering spirits. Using his vast knowledge of the supernatural and the Exorcism Sword he is able to destroy the evil spirits. This series bizarre visuals and use of supernatural abilities secured it a spot on the list. However, it was also chosen because the main character is very different from the previous recommendations. He is not driven by anger or selfish reasons. Instead, Kusuriuri believes in searching for “katachi” (shape), “kotowari” (reasoning), and “makoto” (truth) throughout the world. His greatest fear is that during his travels he’ll cease finding these beliefs and thus discover that he has no reason to exist.

5. Karas

Karas
[Information episodes="OVA 6" aired="Aired: March 25, 2005 – October 26, 2007"]

In this reality, the worlds of demons and humans overlap. Though humans can’t see demons, a balance needs to be maintained. Otherwise, demons could harm or kill people. Insert the protectors of humanity, aka Karas. They maintain the balance. However, one of the longest living protectors has gone rogue. Now, it’s up to the newest member, Yousuke Otoha, to take down the evil Karas who plans on unleashing his army of demons on the world. He must use his newly acquired abilities, and unique physiology, to protect humanity. Karas is another show that centers around a man who receives supernatural abilities to fight evil. Though he is not a ninja, like Fujikido Kenji, Otoha does become skilled as a swordsman. Also, Karas broke away from its contemporary anime shows by mixing 2D and 3D techniques. The CG details enhanced the 2D approach to give the show a unique aesthetic.

6. FLCL

flcl
[Information episodes="OVA 6" aired="April 26, 2000 – March 16, 2001"]

The only connection the show shares with Ninja Slayer, and it’s a strong one, is its absurdity. Both shows are hold no punches and are willing to toss aside traditional anime conventions. Though, Ninja Slayer has unique characters and an interesting story, FLCL blows it out of the water. The characters are so strange and their actions defy logic. The story is confusing, purposely so, and is almost entirely a coming of age metaphor. All you need to know is that the main character’s name is Naota Nandaba. He is a 6th grade boy who is struggling to make sense of the relationships he has with the women around him. From there, just enjoy the crazy fast-paced ride that is FLCL. Get ready to witness some incredible use of color, music, and emotional atmosphere throughout the series.

Each of these shows is noteworthy in its own right. They contain elements of greatness. Ninja Slayer brings those components together to create an intense experience. Though not quite as extreme as some of the recommendations above, the mix of animation, character design, humor, action, and supernatural aspects construct a unique series that has started out very strong. I’m sure it will continue and only become better as the episodes continue. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let us know what you think of these recommendations. Or if you’ve been watching Ninja Slayer chime in with your thoughts on the show so far.

Wow! Bleach has so many characters that it is tough to come up with any kind of top 10 list for it. Invariably, you leave out some fan favorites. Different aspects of a character strike a core with a fan that may not resonate with another. That being the case, there are some characters that most Bleach fans can agree deserve a spot at the top. So, here is our list for Top 10 Lovable Bleach Characters. These characters may not be the strongest, though some of them are, but their personalities, interactions, and relationships are entertaining to watch and keep us talking about them long after the series is over. Let’s jump in and take a look at who made our list!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Kaizou Konpaku

kon

Though his full name is Kaizou Konpaku, Ichigo and the others refer to him as Kon. He is a modified soul capable of fighting hollows. Kon usually takes the form of a small, stuffed teddy bear with a spiky mane and short tail. During the Hueco Mundo Arc, Kon played the role of hero for Karakura Town. Urahara turned Kon into Karakura-Raizer. He then led his team of follow superheroes against the growing number of Hollows that had appeared in town. They then entered a mysterious fortress and took down the Arrancar within. The fortress was destroyed just in time for the final battle to take place in Karakura Town. It’s tough not to like this cute little bear that is actually very perverted and is attracted to women with large breasts. At one point, he took over Ichigo’s body and made a move on Orihime and then kissed Ichigo’s female friend Tatsuki Arisawa (angering her in the process). Let’s also not forget that he also sang the intro for Bleach’s Opening #6.

9. Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck

Nelliel Tu Oderschvank00

“Nel” was the former Tres (#3) Espada. She contains two forms. The first is that of a young child. She looks very small and sounds adorable when she talks with her lisp. Despite this childlike demeanor, she has a surprisingly advanced vocabulary. Though she believes all Shinigami to be evil, she does develop a connection with Ichigo and follows him into Las Noches. Her second (and true) form is that of physically mature woman. In this form, she acts more composed, analytical, and is able to fight her opponents very methodically. She demonstrated this in her fight against Nnoitra Gilga (5th Espada). Also, she was also capable of defeating him when she released her Zanpakutou and entered her Resurreccion form: a centaur. However, at a critical moment she unexpectedly reverted back to a small child. She retains her strong attachment to Ichigo when she enters her mature form. At one point, she comically almost knocked Ichigo unconscious after the battle with Nnoitra. She tackled him with an overly enthusiastic hug while he was already passing out from exhaustion.

8. Rukia Kuchiki

rukia kuchiki00

She was the original Shinigami stationed in Karakura Town. Her adopted brother is Byakuya. At first, she was very cold to others and had trouble making friends. She took her responsibilities as a Shinigami extremely seriously and wanted to fulfill her duty. But, she slowly opened up to Ichigo and the others. She is the one responsible for explaining the world of Shinigami and Hollows to Ichigo. Though not the strongest fighter, her Zanpakutou’s unique ice techniques and her ability to wield Kidou make her a formidable opponent. Early in the anime’s lifespan, people often “shipped” Ichigo and Rukia together. The time they spent together in the first couple of arcs led them to developing a close relationship. Ichigo was the first person that she truly opened up to. Her personality and physical appearance were strikingly opposite to Orihime’s. So, that was another reason why people wanted to see them end up together.

7. Coyote Starrk

Coyote Starrk Bleach

This man is the #1 Espada of Aizen’s army. Of course, having the title means he should be the strongest and lead all the other Espada. This is a responsibility Starrk wants nothing to do with. Unlike the others, he has a distaste for battle and harbors no inherent aggression. The only real motivation he had in the battle at Fake Karakura Town was to prevent any more of his comrades from dying. He is also the only Espada to have split his soul into two beings. Starrk’s counterpart is Lilynette Gingerbuck. The reason for this split is because the original being was so lonely. Its mere presence caused other hollows in the vicinity to lose their soul and die. This was a major reason why they began following Aizen. He was the only person that didn’t die when he was in their presence. The lead up to the reveal of Starrk as #1 was worth it, save for one aspect. His power, fighting prowess, techniques, and character design were definitely fitting for the top Espada. But, it seemed that he was capable of more if he had been truly motivated. Either way, he is a great character and his fight against Shunsui is one of the best ones of the series.

6. Shunsui Kyouraku

bleach shunsui kyouraku

He is the former Captain of the 8th Division. Currently he is the Captain of the 1st Division and Captain-Commander for the entire Gotei 13. He is one of the oldest captains and was trained personally by the previous Captain-Commander Genryuusai Yamamoto. His appearance stands out from the other Captains because he wears a straw hat and a pink, flower patterned kimono over his captain’s uniform. He is an easy-going guy who tries to avoid fighting as much as possible. I mentioned that he isn’t particularly interested in fighting. This was spotlighted in his fight against the #1 Espada, Starrk. Both have similar personalities. So much so, that Starrk proposed the idea that they only pretend to fight while the other Shinigami and Espada battle intensely. Shunsui admitted that he’d prefer to do just that, but he decided that he couldn’t do that to his follow comrades. In the fight he also showed his Zanpakutou’s unique ability: the power to make children’s games real.

5. Toushirou Hitsugaya

bleach Hitsugaya Toushirou

Toushirou is the Captain of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13. He is the youngest captain and is labeled a true prodigy. He keeps a cool demeanor most of the time, but he does consider himself above “immature actions”. He has also developed a cold attitude towards most people. The notable exceptions are Momo Hinamori and Rangiku Matsumoto. There are two main reasons why he’s on this list. First off, it’s truly impressive to see Toushirou’s ability and potential be praised by other formidable characters. Captain Commander Shunsui commented in his fight against Starrk that Toshirou could potentially become stronger than him in another hundred years. Even the enigmatic Gin Ichimaru has stated that Toushirou is the reincarnation of a powerful guardian that returns every few centuries. Of course, this isn’t an exact prophecy. He’s just addressing the fact that this young captain is genius the likes of which are extremely rare. The second is because of his relationship to his lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto. They often bicker with one another, but they actually have a long history and deep down they look out for each other. One important aspect of their relationship is that Toushirou is often tossed aside by bumping into Rangiku’s bosom. Their interactions have led to tons of fanfiction “shipping’ them together.

4. Grimmjow Jaegerjaques

Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez Bleach

Grimmjow was the 5th Espada in Aizen’s Arrancar army. Outside of battles, he is a laidback person who shows disrespect for authority. He’s always looking to prove his strength. Usually that meant wanting to pick a fight with Ulquiorra, whom he saw as inferior in combat prowess, and trying to squash the grudge he had with Ichigo. Once he’s in the midst of combat, his true self emerges. His aggression and ability to exploit the smallest of openings left by his opponent is scary, to say the least. His character design remains a fan favorite to this day. He has light blue, spiked hair and blue eyes with green lines below them that ooze ferocity and strength. His mask covered the right side of his face and was a basic design of a two rows of jagged, sharp teeth. The perfect way to emphasize Grimmjow’s straightforward desire to fight. His Adjuchas form is one of the best ones we’ve seen as well. In the past he was shown as a scaly, white panther. In the flashback, he quickly attacked a group of Adjuchas and impressed them to the point of becoming their leader. He vowed to be their king and lead them towards becoming Vasto Lordes. This glimpse into his past is actually very touching and provides backstory for why Grimmjow always pushes himself to exceed his own limits and overcome any opponent.

3. Gin Ichimaru

bleach Ichimaru Gin

Gin was the Captain of the 3rd Division before he defected and joined Aizen’s ranks. He is known for his nondescript clothing and generally bland appearance. Except that his eyes are always closed and constantly has a large smile plastered on his face. He has the ability to unnerve those around him. This skill plus his naturally mysterious nature give off the sense that he is hiding some sinister plot and is just putting on a fake persona. Gin’s backstory and reasons for aiding Aizen in his plans, for over one hundred years, are heartfelt and tragic. The audience never knew what he was thinking and whether he was in fact truly following Aizen or waiting for an opportunity to turn on him. His manipulation and disinformation skills were second to none. He managed to hide his intentions and his Bankai’s true ability from Aizen for all of that time. In the end, he managed to come the closest to killing Aizen before Ichigo showed up in his new form.

2. Sousuke Aizen

bleach Aizen Sousuke

Before his betrayal of Soul Society, he was the captain of the 5th Division. His gentle personality and soft-spoken attitude earned him the respect of his peers and subordinates. Unfortunately, it was just an illusion that covered up his treacherous and selfish nature. Once he departed from Soul Society, he showed his true colors and led an army of Arrancar in a war against his former comrades. On more than one occasion, Espada have mentioned that the Arrancar follow Aizen because he is a being without fear. This is one of the many reasons for why he is such an attractive character. Aizen was the ultimate bad guy of the series. He outsmarted all of the other Shinigami and even pitted them against each other a few times. He felt that everyone (except Urahara) was beneath him in terms of intelligence and strategy. In fact, Aizen spent over one hundred years and sacrificed hundreds of Shinigami in order to create the Hougyoku. Everything up to the final showdown had been according to his plan. He was most definitely the Batman of the Bleach universe. Also, no one ever posed a threat to him, until his Gin betrayed him and his final battle with Ichigo. I want to emphasize “final” because in their first fight Aizen famously put an abrupt end to Ichigo’s attack (and theme song Number One) with a single finger. Throughout his reign of terror, he had no problem taking on multiple captains at once. Even when he encountered a new technique or Bankai, he quickly developed a counter and regained control of the situation. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the only reason he was defeated by Ichigo was because he was the main character. Sometimes “plot armor” is stronger than the strength of an immortal being with hundreds of years of planning.

1. Ichigo Kurosaki

ichigo kurosaki00

Ichigo is an angsty teenager who hates school, but has a strong sense of justice. His inclination to fight at every opportunity comes from his desire to protect those around him. It is something that was instilled into him as a young child when he overheard his father say that his name meant “to protect one thing”. Ichigo inherited unique properties from each of his parents. His father was a former Shinigami and his mother was from a pure Quincy bloodline. It’s no surprise that the titular character of the series is also one of the most loved ones. We saw him start out as a normal-ish person with a heightened awareness for hollows. Then, he slowly transitioned into a formidable Shinigami, capable of standing toe to toe with any of the captains. Eventually, he became something even greater than that. As I mentioned before, his unique heritage played a key role in his development of abilities and strength. But, his Hollowfication was something else he had going for him as well. He was in a constant struggle against his inner-hollow trying to free itself and take over his body. This Hollow-Ichigo is a very cool aspect of himself that forced him to confront his true motivation for fighting and wanting to gain power. It assisted him in several battles and gave him access to a multitude of unique abilities. Ichigo Kurosaki was given all of the tools (by the author Tite Kubo) necessary to become the strongest character in the entire series. This could come off as lazy writing, but it hasn’t stopped Ichigo from constantly gaining the top position in popularity polls in Japan.

There you have it. What do you think of these Bleach characters? Each of them brings something unique and worthwhile to the series. As I mentioned in the intro, there are a ton of characters in this series. So, I’d like to hear who your favorites are. Don’t be shy. You may even like some of the characters from the Bount Invasion Arc or other filler episodes. They’re fair game since they are in the anime. Thanks for stopping by and reading the article. Top 10 Bleach Zanpakutou

Bleach wallpaper

Zanpakutou are the physical manifestation of a Shinigami's powers, a part of their very soul with their own independent, sentient existence. Much like their owners, each Zanpakutou in Bleach is unique, with their own abilities, characteristics, and personalities. They also have their own names, and through learning what their Zanpakutou are called and communicating with them, Shinigami are able to draw out their powers to their full potential. Thanks to this, Shinigami and their Zanpakutou are more than just master and sword - they are the ultimate partners in battle. Of course, there are many Zanpakutou-wielding characters in Bleach, and not only Shinigami - you can't forget the Arrancar and Visoreds, too! Amongst these countless individual swords, some have the power to stand out amongst the rest - but which will make our Top 10 Bleach Zanpakutou?

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Izuru Kira's Wabisuke

Izuru Kira Bleach
  • English: The Wretched One

First up we have third division lieutenant Izuru Kira's Zanpakutou, Wabisuke. Much like Izuru's disposition, Wabisuke's powers are characteristically dark. As its name suggests, Wabisuke attacks with the aim to make their opponent quite literally fall to their knees, as though apologising for their wretched misdeeds. To do so, it doubles the weight of anything it strikes. With the command "Raise Your Head", Wabisuke also changes into an angled hook shape, allowing Izuru to use his Zanpakutou as a guillotine and decapitate his enemies. What makes Wabisuke worthy of a position on this list is the merciless extent of its ability. Not only does it double the weight of anything it touches once - if the target is struck again, the previously doubled weight doubles again, and this ability is limitless. Furthermore, as this cunningly uses their opponents weight against them, Wabisuke and Kira can fell any enemy that they can get close enough to strike.

9. Renji Abarai's Zabimaru

Renji AbaraiBleach
  • English: Snake Tail
  • Bankai: Hihiou Zabimaru

Next on the list we have Renji Abarai's Zabimaru. Released using the command "Howl", Zabimaru transforms into a jagged six-part blade that can be extended much like a whip, allowing Renji to attack from a significant distance. In Bankai, this Zanpakutou becomes a gigantic skeletal snake with a bright red mane, making it look truly deadly. In this form, Hihiou Zabimaru can shoot incredibly destructive beams from its mouth. As well as being one of the first we see in Shikai form, Zabimaru is one of the few Zanpakutou we actually see develop in Bleach. When we first meet Renji, he is only able to use Shikai, but we watch him communicate with and train alongside Zabimaru until they achieve Bankai. Also, with its wild appearance, both forms of Zabimaru are just too cool not to be on our list.

8. Genryuusai Shigekuni Yamamoto's Ryuujin Jakka

Genryuusai Shigekuni Yamamoto's Ryuujin Jakka Bleach
  • English: Flowing Blade-like Flame

Anyone who's seen the Bleach anime can agree that Captain Commander Yamamoto is one badass old man. He's got the most experience and authority in all of Soul Society, but most of all, he's got the most powerful Zanpakutou. A fire type, Ryuujin Jakka inspires fear even in the strongest of Shinigami. As it's release command "Reduce All Creation to Ash" suggests, in Shikai, Ryuujin Jakka has the ability to turn anything in the vicinity into dust. It can also be used to imprison even the strongest enemies in a cage of flames. So what keeps the all-powerful Captain Commander's Zanpakutou from being higher up on the list? The answer is screen time. With so many powerful captains, lieutenants, and other Shinigami under him, Genryuusai doesn't even have to lift a finger until the fourteenth season of the anime. Although we are told of and see for ourselves some of the destructive power of Ryuujin Jakka, we're left with many unanswered questions.

7. Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez' Pantera

Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez Bleach
  • English: Panther King

Next on our list we have Sexta Espada Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez and his Zanpakutou, Pantera. Unlike Shinigami, when Arrancar release their Zanpakutou using Resurrección, they themselves change into their true forms and become able to use the full extent of their powers. By releasing Pantera using the command "Grind", the Zanpakutou itself disappears and Grimmjow's appearance becomes feline. His already extraordinary strength becomes enhanced, giving even Hollow-masked Ichigo a run for his money in one of the best battles in Bleach. Pantera makes it into the top ten for the range of abilities it has - unlike other Zanpakutou, which tend to have one element or theme to their powers, Pantera enhances hand-to-hand combat, and has explosives, blades, and sound-based attacks in its arsenal. With Pantera's release we also get to learn about Grimmjow's past, and why he is so hungry for power, allowing us to empathise with the enemy.

6. Gin Ichimaru's Shinsou

bleach Ichimaru Gin
  • English: God Spear
  • Bankai: Kamishini no Yari

Much like Gin Ichimaru's snake-like smile, there is something immediately disconcerting about his Zanpakutou. The first time Gin uses Shinsou in the Bleach anime, it leaves both Ichigo's group and viewers wondering what on earth happened. Its Shikai, released with the phrase "Shoot to kill", allows the blade to extend up to one hundred times its original length at incredible speed, barely giving his target the opportunity to block or evade the attack. In Bankai, this length and speed increases even further - although due to Gin's shady nature, by how much is unclear. Retaining the form of a traditional Japanese short sword in all of its releases, you could say Shinsou is a grower, not a shower - but Gin certainly knows what he's doing with it. By downplaying its speed and exaggerating its length, he is able to mentally manipulate his enemies. He also hides Shinsou's ability to turn to dust and enter his opponents' body and poison them on command, allowing him to use it as a trump card. With both Shinigami and Zanpakutou not willing to give anything away, this combo is more than deadly, earning them sixth place on our list.

5. Sousuke Aizen's Kyouka Suigetsu

bleach Aizen Sousuke
  • English: Mirror Flower, Water Moon

Not all Zanpakutou are created equal, and Kyouka Suigetsu is the perfect example of how they can be just as twisted as their Shinigami. Just like the former fifth division captain Sousuke Aizen, all is not as it seems with Kyouka Suigetsu. Although everyone who has seen its Shikai is convinced that it has a regular power like the rest of them, in fact that is nothing but a delusion - its actual power is "Complete Hypnosis." Kyouka Suigetsu manipulates its enemies so that they only see what Sousuke wants them to see, giving him complete control of any situation. What makes Kyouka Suigetsu stand out from the other Zanpakutou on this list is that it does not depend on physical but sensory attacks. It is also one of the most terrifying Zanpakutou, as its powers seem to have no time limit, having affected the Visored for over one hundred years. Furthermore, even if Sousuke's opponents realise that they're being tricked, they can't do anything about it. It is impossible to escape Kyouka Suigetsu's illusions once they have started - making this the most fitting weapon for Bleach's ultimate antagonist.

4. Byakuya Kuchiki's Senbonzakura

bleach Kuchiki Byakuya
  • English: Thousand Cherry Blossoms
  • Bankai: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi

Next we have a Zanpakutou as beautiful and deadly as the Shinigami that wields it: Senbonzakura. When its Shikai is activated with the command "Scatter", Senbonzakura breaks down into a thousand tiny blades, which Byakuya then controls with the remaining hilt. In Bankai, Senbonzakura's destructive power multiplies exponentially, with the amount of near-invisible blades becoming countless and nigh on inescapable. What's more, unlike in Shikai, Byakuya does not need to physically control Senbonzakura Kageyoshi - although doing so does increase attack speed. All in all, Senbonzakura is an elegant weapon and mesmerizing to watch in action. Seeing Byakuya fight with his released Zanpakutou is exciting not only because you know you're in for some amazing action, but also because it shows a different side to Byakuya. It lets viewers know that although he is cold and proud, he is also able to be passionate and go all-out in battle. With its cherry-blossom image, Senbonzakura also perfectly suits Byakuya, who is fixated on tradition.

3. Toushirou Hitsugaya's Hyourinmaru

bleach Hitsugaya Toushirou
  • English: Ice Ring
  • Bankai: Daiguren Hyourinmaru

Toushirou Hitsugaya may be small, but his strength is anything but. Not only is he a captain, but his Zanpakutou Hyourinmaru is said to be the strongest ice-type in Soul Society. Hyourinmaru's Shikai, which is released using the command "Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens", allows Toushirou to control water and ice, creating fierce-looking dragons from the tip of his blade. In Bankai form, a dragon of ice wraps itself around Toushirou's body, giving him frozen wings and claws. Even if shattered, Daiguren Hyourinmaru can easy regenerate itself. As if that wasn't cool enough, Hyourinmaru's power is so intense that even just releasing its Shikai can change the weather, creating great storms. But what really makes it worthy of such a high position in this top ten list is its potential. Toushirou admits in the series that his powers are still somewhat underdeveloped, explaining the reason for the ice flowers that signal the lifespan of his Bankai. He is already incredibly strong, but once Toushirou has fully mastered Hyourinmaru's abilities he will no doubt become a true force to be reckoned with.

bleach Toshiro Hitsugaya

2. Rukia Kuchiki's Sode no Shirayuki

rukia kuchiki00
  • English: Sleeved White Snow

Next up and taking the number-two spot is another ice type and Bleach's best girl Rukia Kuchiki's Zanpakutou, Sode no Shirayuki. When released using the Shikai command, "Dance", the entire length of Rukia's sword turns as white as snow, matching the colour of her spiritual energy. The tsuba also changes shape, becoming snowflake-like, and from the pommel flows a white ribbon. Due to this appearance, Sode no Shirayuki is said to be one of the most beautiful in all of Soul Society. But it's not just its appearance that makes this Zanpakutou so popular - Sode no Shirayuki is also incredibly powerful. Following its Shikai command, it has three "dances": "First Dance, White Moon", "Next Dance, White Ripple", and "Third Dance, White Sword". Each of these dances showcase a different ice-based technique, each more powerful than the last. With Rukia's emotional backstory, watching her and Sode no Shirayuki working together to become stronger is enough to melt even the most icy of hearts.

1. Ichigo Kurosaki's Zangetsu

ichigo kurosaki00
  • English: Slaying Moon
  • Bankai: Tensa Zangetsu

It might seem a little too obvious to have the protagonist's weapon at number one, but be assured it's for good reason. From the moment Ichigo wraps his hand around his Zanpakutous hilt, it's clear to the viewer that Zangetsu is something special. Not only is the shape of its original sword form unique, but it's also bursting with overwhelming strength. However, Zangetsu earns the number one spot not just for sheer power or its cool appearance(s), but for the complexity of its character. Unlike most Shinigami, Ichigo has an amalgamation of Shinigami and Hollow powers - something which is reflected in the way Zangetsu appears in Ichigo's inner world. We see first see him as "Old Man Zangetsu" and "Hollow Ichigo", then the younger-looking "Tensa Zangetsu", the evolved "Hollow Ichigo", and even as a combination of the latter two. Thanks to this character development, Zangetsu also gets the most screentime of all the Zanpakutou, making us as viewers feel closer to him, and root for him throughout the series.

It's been awhile since the Bleach anime ended, but these Zanpakutou and their Shinigami are sure to stay vivid in our memories (and hopefully more anime seasons in future!). K: Return of Kings Preview / Plot (No Spoilers)

A much awaited sequel after its previous first season of anime and movie, K: Return of Kings continued on where it left off with Kushina Anna being chosen to be the new Red King. The Silver Clansmen, Yatogami Kuroh and Neko, continued to wait for their King, Isana Yashiro’s return when it appeared that the Green Clan is suddenly targeting them. Having left no choice but to turn to HOMRA and Scepter 4 for information and help, they all discovered that there’s increasing activity in the Green Clan, targeting members of each clan in Shizume City. With Shiro’s return and the Green Clan’s plan kicked into motion, the Kings, new and old, are brought together before the slate that granted them power. But meanwhile, the Blue King Munakata Reishi has to face the ticking clock of his own downfall…

What does K: Return of Kings cater to?

Not only it is a sequel, K: Return of Kings is part of the huge K Project franchise, which, other than anime and movie, includes novels, manga, and other side materials. While GoRA, its creators, themselves confirmed that K: Return of Kings was intended to be easily enjoyed by anime and movie-only viewers, this sequel is clearly aimed for audience who are attached to the characters already, or at least have watched the first season and the movie. There is a drawback to it, though—those who closely follow other installments of the franchise might find themselves a bit disappointed with the lack of references made to the prequels, both novels and manga.

What’s so appealing about this piece of work

K Project is handled by GoRA, a collaboration of seven authors who identify themselves by a color each. One of the good thing that comes out of this is a very good world-building, especially considering K’s genre. Another appeal is the array of characters and how easily they are to love—K has so many characters that it might confuse those who try to get into it, but once they do, they would be very much attached to the characters. GoHands play with a lot of interesting angles and color blurs in its animation for K to comply with the tone and concept of its story—bar HOMRA always looks especially beautiful and warm. Those who love angela might be a bit disappointed since they had to give up doing the songs for K since it airs at the same time as the second cour of Soukyuu no Fafner EXODUS, which is also another one of Starchild’s anime. NO worries, though, they wrote the song for Horie Yui’s Asymmetry, which is the opening for K Return of Kings, and made a comeback in the last episode’s ending song. There’s also, of course, the seiyuu line-up that stays as fabulous as the first season: they kept Tsuda Kenjirou and Kaji Yuuki, and in addition to the usual top-tiered seiyuu in K such as Miyano Mamoru, Fukuyama Jun, Ono Daisuke and Awashima Seri, they also added Masakazu Morita and Kugimiya Rie to the list.

K: Return of Kings Main Characters List

Isana Yashiro (Adolf K. Weissman)

Yashiro_Isana

Voice Actor :Namikawa Daisuke

Shiro is kindhearted, easily gets along with literally everyone, if a bit of a trickster sometimes. Known as the First and the Silver King, holding the power of immortality, K: Return of Kings become the stage of Shiro’s comeback after his ‘death’ in the previous anime season. After the loss of his best friend, the Gold King Kokujouji Daikaku, Shiro descended back to Shizume City to face the new threat the Green Clan brings, but most importantly, to protect the new family he’d found. Still the same carefree, yet charismatic Shiro, he’s the one who initiates the first meetings and cooperation among the Kings.

Munakata Reishi

Reishi_Munakata

Voice Actor :Sugita Tomokazu

Upholding order as his most important cause as the Blue King, Munakata Reishi is the very composed Captain of Tokyo Legal Affairs Bureau, Civil Registry Department, Annex 4, or most commonly known as the Blue Clan, Scepter 4. As a King, Reishi commands the respect and admiration of his clan, even if he’s very eccentric at times. Very observant and eloquent, Reishi might seem like the most sophisticated, refined adult in the world of [K], until his unexpected childish side comes to play—mostly when he tries to socialize with his co workers and clansmen, which leads to certain fears amongst the members of Scepter 4.

Kushina Anna

Anna_Kushina

Voice Actor :Horie Yui

The Princess of HOMRA who is now the Red King. Anna believes that the ‘power of red’ she’s wielding symbolizes the bond of HOMRA, and is determined to be a good King the way Mikoto was to his clan. The mostly quiet and expressionless girl in the first season of the anime has now become a girl who confidently speaks up her voice and shows her emotions, even if she mostly still keeps to herself. She’s good friends with Silver clan’s Neko now, and is shown to be very open to invitation to cooperate with the other clans. Her powers, both as a Strain and a King, proves to be very helpful in the course of the battles between King, that even Nagare remarks over how she’s already able to control her King’s power quite well despite the short time that’s passed since she was chosen to be the new Red King by the slate.

Hisui Nagare

Nagare Hisui K Return of Kings

Voice Actor :Okitsu Kazuyuki

The mysterious, extremely intelligent Green King who reigns over . Nagare aspires to reform the world, to change it through the power of the slates, and believes in equality amongst humans—if one holds the power of a King, then others should, too. Nagare is very blunt, and doesn’t seem to care much about the loyalty of his clansmen, but absolutely trusts in his higher-up clansmen, which only consisted of Iwafune Tenkei, Gojo Sukuna, and Mishakuji Yukari. He’s very manipulative, but has a surprisingly childish side to him as well.

K: Return of Kings Review

The K Project franchise fans who have been following the novels, manga, and other side materials have been waiting for this sequel in anticipation. Even before the sequel aired, there were promotional images in the forms of 100 Days x Visuals, as well as hints from GoRA’s tweets about what the sequel would cover. Considering these teasings, it’s only normal that the franchise fans were simultaneously hyped up and worried about the sequel. All in all, though, the sequel went fairly well, even if it wasn’t as impressive as the first season. For anime-only fans, though, K Return of Kings satisfactorily answers all the leftover questions about what’s going to happen next, which the movie left out hanging. From what becomes of HOMRA after Mikoto’s death and Anna being chosen as the Red King, to who is the Green Clan and what happens to Reishi as his Sword of Damocles continues to break down slowly. Unlike the first season that incorporated a surprising twist at the very end, K Return of Kings chose to go the conventional way of having the source of their power removed to solve the conflict: the slate destroyed, and thus the King's powers. What K Return of Kings highlights the most, compared to the first season and even the side materials, is the bond between the Kings and their clansmen. It’s highlighted in each of the clan: in the reunion of the Silver Clan and how protective Kuroh and Neko are over Shiro once he’s back, as well as in Misaki’s promise to protect Anna. The Green Clan is an excellent example for this: in one most impressive twist in the sequel, Iwafune was revealed to be the Gray King, and yet he still whole-heartedly obeys Nagare because he’s now a Green Clansman. The absolute trust Sukuna puts in Nagare’s abilities and promises, and how Yukari follows Nagare’s orders without question despite previously being a Colorless Clansman.

K Return of the Kings wallpaper

The grandest of them all, though, has to be Blues. Despite Reishi got legally fired as the Captain, his clansmen disregard their status and follows him to the last battle, where they once again state before Reishi that they’re, first and foremost, are the Blue Clan and Reishi is their King. Not only that, Fushimi Saruhiko’s character development in this sequel revolves around how he ‘betrayed’ Scepter 4, only to be revealed later that he’d put his life on the line in that mission because Reishi ordered him to. The extent to which the clansmen would go for their King, and how different Kings leave their own mark in their clansmen hearts, which later manifests into an indestructible bond between them is what K: Returns of Kings delivers to us. Another one that should be put on the spotlight is, of course, the relationships between fellow Kings. Shiro’s initiation for the the Blue, Red and Silver Clan to work together against the Green Clan is a turning point in K:, especially considering the previous message of the first season and the side materials before this: Being a King means seizing an impressive power, but also loneliness that not even the clansmen would understand. Each clan tends to keep to themselves—sure, there’s bound to be a clash here and there, but each have their territory and an unspoken agreement not to deal with the other clan unless they absolutely have to. Through the grand Tea Table Conference, Shiro changes this and brings the Kings together, and, consequently, opens up honest communication between Kings, a way to solve previously buried conflicts such as the ones between Reishi and Anna.

1. Welcome Home, Shiro

K RETURNOFKINGS Review Highlight 1

The first and, probably, the most anticipated scene in the sequel, is when Shiro finally returns just in time to shield Kuroh from Yukari’s deciding attack, as if responding to Neko’s call seconds before. As he remarks before jumping off the blip, this time, Shiro falls down the sky of his own accord, in order to get back to the ones he holds dear, and to put a stop to those threatening them. While Shiro’s return is definitely an impressive bang that shows his power and position as a King, the Silver Clan reunion scene once Yukari departed was very much adorable and heartfelt. But both scenes highlighted the same: this is where Shiro makes a point to the audience, that he’s the Silver King, who belongs to his clansmen as much as they do to him.

2. The Five Kings

K RETURNOFKINGS Review Highlight 2

Following the intense chase and fights between Anna and Nagare, and later Shiro’s appearance and Reishi who strikes down Nagare is the most impressive twist in the sequel: the appearance of the fifth King, the Gray King. For the first time in the series, five Kings gathers in the place where the slate is, with all of their Sword of Damocles out, the air crackling with power. It’s a shame that by then Nagare is already down, because if not, the battle would have involved him as well. As it is, the battle was mostly between Iwafune and Reishi, with Shiro protecting Anna from ricocheting bullets as their lines of sight is severely limited by the gray fog. Nonetheless, this is the one scene that shows the domain of Kings—a showdown between more than two Kings and, furthermore, confirms their affiliations.

3. Mending Broken Bonds

K RETURNOFKINGS Review Highlight 3

One of the most awaited things not only in the anime, but also the whole series as a franchise, is the final resolve of the conflict between Saruhiko and Misaki. Far before the anime aired, GoRA had tweeted that Saruhiko and Misaki’s relationship would change in [K] Return of Kings, and of course, the sequel delivers. When Reishi tells Misaki the truth that Saruhiko is infiltrating the Greens on his order, Misaki grows worried, and at the same time, begins to think about Saruhiko’s position. Determined to help and save his old friend, as well as to understand Saruhiko at last, Misaki crashes in the fight between Sukuna and Saruhiko just in time to save his friend and hauls him away. Half-angry and unreluctant conversation ensues as they run, with Misaki admitting that Saruhiko really is a Blue Clansman, and that Saruhiko should have just explained everything to him in a way that even an idiot like him could understand. The two fall back to fighting together against Sukuna and win, and as Misaki leaves to fulfill his role as a Red Clansman, Saruhiko promises to think of a way to explain things so that Misaki could understand. Their conflict is closed with a hopeful outlook, a promise to talk, and at the last episode ending, the two are shown hanging out together.

Conclusion

As a huge franchise, K retains loyal fans who follow not only the anime, but also the novels, manga, and other side materials. The world of K is huge and complicated, and the anime is but a simplified version of it. Of course, the enjoyment of the series would multiply if you were to follow all the side materials and get to know the characters closer, but there’s no doubt that anime-only fans could enjoy only the anime and the movie without having to immerse themselves in the many side materials. While K: Return of Kings is not a character-driven show, the characters and relationships depicted in it are what made it into a very enjoyable ride. It might not have been as impressive as the first season’s plot twist, but it does give a satisfactory ending to almost all of the conflicts presented, and furthermore, endears the characters to the audience even more, and might even entice them to follow other installments in the franchise afterwards. If you watched K: Return of Kings, or if you’re also one of the fans who follow the whole K franchise, let us know what you think about the sequel!

dvd Juubee Ninpuuchou Ninja Scroll

In the 1990's, anime was not as plentiful and available as it is in this modern era of simulcasting so fans would take pretty much whatever they could get their hands on which is why for so many fans, Ninja Scroll is a title that holds a special place in their hearts. First released as a movie in 1993 (it got a TV sequel in 2003), Ninja Scroll is a 94 minute feature which follows Jubei, a wandering swordsman who saves a young female ninja from being raped by demonic humans. Eventually their paths cross again and the pair are sent on a mission to investigate the murder of an entire village and the truth behind the demons who are hiding in plain sight among the humans of the world. Perhaps you loved Ninja Scroll and want to see more titles like it or perhaps you hated Ninja Scroll but want to see titles that are similar but not quite as horrifically violent. Regardless, we've come up with six alternatives to get your anime ninja fix!

1. Basilisk

dvd Basilisk
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Apr. 2005 – Sept. 2005 "]

If you're into the blood and violence of Ninja Scroll and want more of the same, this is the very first title that you should be looking towards. In this 2005 series, the setting is 1614 AD and two rival ninja clans are fighting to the death for the possession of a scroll. The last clan standing will not only get to see their enemies destroyed forever but will also receive the backing of the Tokugawa government for the next thousand years. In many ways (but not all) one could consider Basilisk to be a spiritual successor to Ninja Scroll. As mentioned previously, the series is filled to the brim with all the blood, violence and murder that you could possibly want while also delivering a solid story that has lived on in the hearts and minds of fans since it was first released a little over a decade ago.

2. Katanagatari

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jan. 2010 – Dec. 2010 "]

If you're not as into the blood and violence of Ninja Scroll but still want to see impressive action sequences, look towards the 2010 series Katanagatari created by the same man who brought you the Monogatari series. In this series, the setting is the Edo era and the hero is a martial arts master living in exile named Yasuri Shichika. Under the orders of a general and master strategist named Togame, he leaves his home and goes on a quest to find the twelve treasured swords made by the master swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki. One thing that Ninja Scroll had that Katanagatari also possesses are amazing action sequences that get you on the edge of your seat and leave you craving more, more, more. In every episode, Katanagatari delivers the action with heart pounding martial arts, satisfying death sequences and a great story filled with twists and turns just for good measure.

3.Yotoden: Chronicle of the Warlord Period (Sengoku Kitan Youtouden)

Yotoden Chronicle of the Warlord Period dvd
[Information episodes=" 3 " aired=" May 1987 – Nov. 1988 "]

Predating Ninja Scroll by a good six years, Yotoden is a three episode OVA series which features samurais, ninjas and plenty of action scenes which are fueled by a desire for revenge! The story for this title features a young female ninja who manages to escape her village as it is destroyed by Lord Nobunaga. Carrying only a mystical short sword, she swears to take down Nobunaga and get her revenge. Soon she is joined by two other ninja who also carry mystical weapons and the trio set out on their mission. Ninjas seeking revenge and having to go through demons to get it is a pretty common theme in martial arts anime and this release is absolutely no different in that regard. If you loved the darkness of Ninja Scroll and want to get some more of that action on your screen, this is not a bad direction to look.

4. Sword For Truth (Shuranosuke Zanmaken: Shikamamon no Otoko)

Sword For Truth dvd
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" Dec. 1990 "]

Another title that predates the subject of this article by a couple of years, this is another entry that pits samurai vs. ninja. The hero of this one (if you want to call him that) is Shurannosuke Sakiki, a masterless samurai with unrivaled sword skills. One day he is hired by the Nakura Clan to rescue a princess from the Seki Ninja. While Ninja Scroll features ninjas as the heroes, they are the villains in this movie which makes it just slightly different from many of the other titles on this list. That doesn't sever the basic threads that ties the titles together though which is hyper action from start to finish.

5. Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X)

[Information episodes=" 94 " aired=" Jan. 1996 – Sept. 1998 "]

Getting away from ninjas specifically, how about samurai? One of the most famous samurai anime in history is Rurouni Kenshin and there's a very good reason for that. Originally airing in 1996 and lasting for an impressive 94 episodes, Rurouni Kenshin won fans around the world in the years following its original airing as anime became more popular with fans around the world. In this series, the story follows a former assassin named Kenshin who is now a wanderer in the Meiji era. Upon entering a small town, he is mistaken for a bandit who is using his former name which eventually leads to him moving into a small dojo and making new friends. If you're looking for ninja action, you'll want to look towards the second season (also known as the Kyoto Arc) which features ninjas and samurais alike doing fierce battle against each other often times to the death. In this arc, Kenshin teams up with the Oniwaban clan of ninjas in order to take on an old foe from the war who is still out for blood. Our plucky hero must channel his inner demons and bring back the man he used to be in order to defeat the evil villain who is causing death and destruction wherever he goes.

6. Shigurui

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2007 – Oct. 2007 "]

And now we've come full circle and are back to the violence. Originally airing in 2007, this is one of the most violent series of the last decade and will make even the most hardened of gore fans a little queasy at times. The story takes place in the Edo era and features a tournament held by Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga. In this particular tournament, real swords are to be used and one of the matches features a one armed fighter named Fujiki Gennosuke and a blind fighter named Irako Seigen. Both of these fighters come from the same discipline and are eager to prove themselves worthy of being the next successor. As with other entries in this list, this isn't strictly a ninja series but more warriors who are skilled in various forms of martial arts. To appreciate one though it's often good to appreciate the other and Shigurui will help you do just that.

Top 10 Coolest Noragami Characters

$

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
noragami wallpaper

Noragami is one of the most recent, top quality shounen shows about, with both of its series having awesome soundtracks and a beautiful, crisp art style. Literally translating as “stray God”, Noragami does an excellent job of creating incredibly powerful characters, namely Gods and their tools, and then humanizing them, showing their daily struggles despite their position, and their constant reliance on others regardless of their individual strength. Despite being a shounen, Noragami’s cast isn’t excessively large, centering on a small number of key characters. With the show’s unique art and a heavy action focus, there are of course some awesome character designs, ranging from bloodthirsty Gods of Calamity, to rebellious, young Shinki. So taking that into consideration, we’ve gone and listed the top ten coolest characters from the show, so have a read below.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Ebisu

Ebisu Noragami Aragoto

The clean and plain looking God of Fishing and Commerce Ebisu is up first, a surprisingly dark and secretive God of fortune. It’s a while before we learn much about Ebisu, with most of his actions remaining unknown throughout the series, being very much the man of mystery. An incredibly calm and efficient man, his pursuit of his goals is both admirable and enviable, as he willingly goes as far as venturing into the underworld to accomplish them. Which doesn’t seem to bother him in the slightest by the way. With his long jacket, tailored suit, and pure white gloves, Ebisu looks like a mix between a businessman and a well-dressed butler, which seems appropriate given his personality. Although not generically cool, Ebisu has a confidence and composure about him that, coupled with his sleek appearance, makes him at the least a fascinating character.

ebis Noragami captcha

9. Daikoku

Daikoku Noragami

Shinki of Kofuku the Goddess of Poverty, and in many ways her carer, Daikoku is one of the manliest men in Noragami. Seemingly not afraid of anyone or anything, Daikoku has no trouble dishing out punishment to Gods like Yato and Kofuku when he thinks they’re screwing about, and tries his best to be the moral compass of the mishmash group. As his mistress tends to incur bad luck, he tries to focus on ways of avoid fighting altogether, so as to ensure she doesn’t accidentally destroy Japan. In his Shinki form Daikoku quite surprisingly turns into an elaborate fan, with one of his abilities being to create a portal to the underworld itself, not something many are capable of doing. Daikoku’s tough act and caring personality make him seem like a cool father character, and the Gods he’s looking after seem like little kids!

Noragami wallpaper

8. Kuraha

kuraha Noragami

One of Bishamon’s most notable Shinki, Kuraha is considered second in command behind Kazuma, her primary Shinki, being both sensible and wise. One of the coolest looking Shinki in the series, in both his regular and Shinki forms, Kuraha’s standard appearance is that of a well-dressed pirate, with some intense facial hair going on, and an eyepatch to accompany his suit. As for his Shinki form, well, the dudes a lion. A Lion. I don’t think any more needs to be said than that. Kuraha is awesomely loyal and cares deeply about his comrades. And not just his fellow Shinki, but as long as he is doing right by his master, Kuraha appears to be a very caring person. It can be easy to forget about him with most of his time being spent as a lion, but Kuraha is one seriously awesome old man.

kuraha Noragami captcha

7. Rabou

Rabou Noragami

One of the show’s main antagonists, like Yato, Rabou is a God of Calamity, known for leaving death and suffering in his wake. Unlike Yato however, Rabou didn’t develop a conscience and carries on as he always has as an evil God. To this end Rabou possesses some pretty sweet abilities, including being able to absorb Phantoms, and his Shinki allowing him to control water, creating liquid doubles of himself as well as wielding it as a weapon. Rabou’s character design screams anime antagonist, with his flowing silver hair, and the combination of his mad yellow eye and pointed mask giving him a crow like visage. Along with characters like Ebisu, Rabou is a good example of how much contrast there is between the designs in the show.

Rabou Noragami wallpaper

6. Tenjin

Tenjin Noragami

Old man Tenji is the God of Learning, and among the wealthiest and popular of Gods (because who doesn’t pray for higher grades). Quite the silver fox, despite his grey and intellectual appearance, Tenjin has basically formed his own harem, with a preference for young female Shinkis, and a boatload of charm and money at his disposal. Seriously, they’re literally leaving other Gods to be with him: see Yato’s unfortunate Shinki experience early on. Not your regular kind of cool guy, Tenjin is more badass grandad material, full of stupid, pervy jokes and yet still maintaining a following of gorgeous young women. On top of that, Tenjin is a true bro, helping out when it’s really needed and even doing favors behind heaven’s back, you don’t get much smoother than that.

5. Hiyori Iki

noragami iki hiyori

Where to start with our main girl Hiyori Iki, she does not get the credit she deserves. The only half-human, half-phantom in the series, her funky tail helps connect her to the Far Shore, being one of the few humans that can see Gods and other supernatural beings. While she’s just an ordinary, pro-wrestling obsessed high school girl, when she leaves her regular body behind and becomes her half-Phantom self, she gains incredible strength and agility, capable of taking on weaker Phantoms by herself. Despite her frail, mortal body, Hiyori generally doesn’t seem too bothered about mixing with Gods, or fighting them. Her main priority is making sure that everyone is safe, excluding herself for the most part.

noragami iki hiyori wallpaper

4. Yukine

yukine00

Young and rebellious, Yukine is Yato’s current Skinki and a pretty powerful one at that, taking the form of the long, curved blade, Sekki. Yukine, meaning “sound of snow”, is an interesting name to give to someone so loud and with such a brash attitude, but it also says something about the cleanness and innocence of such a young and unknowing character. Plus it sounds pretty neat. One of the cool things about Yukine is watching him deal with teenage problems, in a world where he’s surrounded by pretty much only adults, and kind of old ones at that. Although he fares pretty badly at first, his strong desire to mature, better himself and stand amongst his peers is admirable for someone going through such a hard time, and make him one of the most relatable characters in the show.

Noragami yukine wallpaper

3. Kazuma

Kazuma Noragami

Bishamon’s lead Shinki, Kazuma is a powerful Blessed Regalia, acting as her navigator and advisor throughout the series. Looking surprisingly ordinary and clean cut, Kazuma is one of the few characters in the series to always wear glasses, making him stand out considerably amongst the cast. Kazuma is easily one of the most respectable and reasonable characters, even knowing when it is best to disobey his master for her own sake. It’s this attitude that makes him so awesome, as you can always trust good guy Kazuma. On top of that, Kazuma appears to be one of the most powerful Shinki, having no trouble creating Boundary’s or using Restraint, amongst his many other abilities. This also enables him to fulfill the cool sensei role for Yukine and Hiyori when there’s no one else around to educate them about all things Far Shore.

Noragami wallpaper

2. Bishamon

Bishamon Noragami

Next up, the strong and sexy God of War and Fortune Bishamon. Bishamon plays something like Yato’s rival throughout the series, with them both at each other’s throats most of the time, and having some quite different ideas regarding how to go about business. Despite this, Bishamon is probably the God in Noragami most dedicated to protecting her Shinki, even though it often causes her great pain. She also does an incredible job of remaining one of the most powerful characters in the show, whilst still retaining her femininity, and acting as not just a master but almost as a mother to her family of Shinki. Her all black outfit really stands out, making her look like something of a cross between a warrior and a dominatrix, which added to the fact that she rides a lion is pretty intimidating. Her armory is also pretty impressive, with an ensemble of weapons including a whip, a gun, and a two handed sword, along with a full suit of battle armor just in case. With her straightforward attitude and bright purple, cat-like eyes, Bishamon is certainly one seriously cool gal.

Noragami wallpaper

1. Yato

Noragami yato

And at number one the stray god himself, Yato is the series protagonist and the one causing most of the trouble. Being a God of Calamity, Yato has an innate bad ass vibe going on, with a history of battles, wars and assassination behind him. Despite his current homeless lifestyle, when things get serious it’s easy to see Yato’s previous self shine through, being incredibly calculated and tactical when it comes to fighting. Although coming across at first as a joker whose main priority is looking after number one, Yato’s attitude towards others is surprisingly admirable and he becomes increasingly dependable as the show progresses, caring more about his friends than himself. As far as his appearance goes, Yato’s brilliant blue eyes are one of the main distinguishing features of the show, with the color schemes of both Noragami and Noragami Aragoto’s openings centered on those jewel-like blues. Yato is cool in the same way a lot of anime protagonists are: because they come to be the good guy we’re all cheering for.

Noragami game

Conclusion

Most of the characters of Noragami are good, respectable and cool in their own way, they’re often just misunderstood and prone to manipulation. And that complex storytelling is what makes the show so good, creating characters with human emotions and desires that are hard not to relate to.
